General Information
The transportation of school children is an integral part of our educational system and requires the dedication and cooperation of many individuals. However, the ultimate responsibility to ensure the safe transportation of our children rests with the school bus drivers. The Transportation Department goes to great lenghts to ensure the quality and skill of its bus drivers, and the safety of the children they drive to school everyday. They must know what to do in an emergency or accident. During the 2001-2002 school year, the Transportation Department has driven over 1,740,000 miles and picked up or delivered over 1,225,000 students; with an accident rate of .0000201 accidents/per miles traveled.

About the Bus Attendants:
Attendants are responsible for:

The attendants serve a very important function for transportation; and most especially, the students. Making special needs students feel safe and secure is one of the most precious attributes of these employees. They have proven themselves a great asset to both the drivers and the students.

Special Needs Transportation:
The Special Education Program continues to show an increase in enrollment within the Amphitheater School District during the 2001-2002 school year. The additional students currently attending classes throughout the district resulted in a ten percent increase in transportation support from the previous school year.

Special Needs students are supported by 15 wheel chair equipped buses, 8 ambulatory buses, along with several of our 85 passenger buses, which provide ambulatory services. additionally, we must keep spare buses available at all times. The total fleet of 24 Special Needs buses must have all components, such as air conditioning and wheel chair lift, working 100% at all times.

During the 01/02 school year we operated 128 routes which transported 494 Special Needs students daily. Our combined effort with contracted carriers transported 610 students safely to and from school each day during the last school year.

Requests in changes for Special Needs Transportation are setup through the Wetmore Office, at (520) 696-5236.
