Hamamatsu City
Nanyo Junior High School

On November 28, 2000 our FMF group visited Nanyo Junior High School. We learned a great deal and our hosts were wonderful. The students were eager to help us and show us around.

The students at the school all walk or ride their bikes to school. They do not have school buses. At the front door they take off their shoes and put on their slippers. The students even have special slippers when they use the bathroom.

The principal of this school, pictured above, has 531 students, 29 teachers, and 8 additional staff. In Japan, education is only compulsory through grade 9. The junior high has students in grades 7, 8, and 9.

The students focus on the following themes in this school:
7th grade students focus on Environmental problems and issues.
8th grade students focus on Health and Welfare issues.
9th grade students have an international theme and focus on global understanding

The students eat lunch together with their homeroom class. The cafeteria workers shown above make great amounts of rice for the students.

The students get the food from the caferteria and wear masks to prevent the spread of germs when they serve the food. The lunch period was an hour long.

There is a period each school day where all of the students clean the school.

Most students attend after school clubs. Below are pictures of the students participating in their club activities.

Here is a movie of the students teaching us how to say "Hi" in Japanese.
