"Salary for Credit"
Ellen Harris - Rio Vista Elementary
I started working at CDO High School as a Groundskeeper. I had considered being a teacher several times in my life, but the cost was always prohibitive. I heard about the “Classified Salary Credit” Program during orientation and decided to pursue a teaching certificate.
During the two years that I was taking classes, I had practicums that required me to be in the classroom. I did three at CDO, three at Cross, and three at Mesa Verde. I could not have completed my education without the financial support of the “Classified Salary Credit” Program and if I had not been able to work in these classrooms.
I am now a teacher with a K-8 certification. I have substituted almost every day since I received my certificate and now have a long-term job lined up at Rio Vista Elementary. The “Classified Salary Credit” Program really helped me achieve my goal!

In 2003, I became an Amphi employee while I was in school working towards my teacher certification. The benefits I received, as a benefits eligible classified employee, were amazing. One of the perks was the Classified Salary Credit Program. This benefit reimburses employees $31.26 per credit. I worked, went to school, and once a year my employer sent me a check to reimburse me for a portion of my tuition. It was fantastic! I started with Amphi as a classified employee and with the district’s financial support, and a lot of hard work on my part, I am now a certified teacher.
