Math Cats: Old Egyption Fractions - (INT-MS) Students add unit fractions with unlike denominators to reach a given goal. Fraction pies are used to visualize the combinations. Problem solving thinking processes are needed to be successful. (Microworlds Web Viewer is required. A link to a free download is at the site.) (Strand 1: Number Sense and Operations, Concept 2: Numerical Operations)
Math Cats: Story Problems - (PRI-MS) This page links to a variety of word problems, many submitted by students. The problems are available on printable pages and as online problems with the answers given on a "magic chalkboard". Students may also submit their own problems to the site. (Strand 1: Number Sense, Concept 2: Numerical Operations)

| Problem Solving: Dealing With Data In the Elementary School - (INT) This activity is a project based unit on statistics. It furnishes a vehicle for problem solving through real data collection and analysis. Students use the mean, mode and median to analyze their data and use graphs to represent their findings. (Strand 2: Data Analysis, Probability, and Discrete Mathematics Concept 1: Data Analysis (Statistics) |
Strand 3 |
Math Cats: Polygon Playhouse - Students are given a workspace and sets of several different polygons of different sizes and colors. Students can create patterns using the shapes. (Strand 3: Patterns, Algebra, and Functions, Concept 1: Patterns)

Strand 4 |
Time Flies - (INT/MS) An on-line activity in which students learn to convert 12-hour time into 24-hour time. They then apply this as they act as an air traffic controller and help planes land. There is also a group activity to do in the classroom. There are links to the student activities (on-line and group), a teacher page, and a link to information about the author. (Strand 4: Geometry and Measurement Concept 4: Measurement)
Flight Path - (INT/MS) This is an activity in which students plan and measure a flight path from San Francisco to New York and back. Some of the lesson is conducted on the Internet, and some of the lesson is hands-on in the classroom. Students work independently and in groups. The site has links to the student activities, a teacher page, and a link to information about the author. Students will need maps of the US with a scale on them and rulers. (Strand 4: Geometry and Measurement Concept 4:Units of Measure, Geometric Objects)
