MAP Learning Continuum--Mathematics Geometry
Types of Polygons - Given a name of a shape, students figure out how many sides it has. (Strand 4: Geometry and Measurement, Concept 1: Geometric Properties)
Math Cats: Polygon Playhouse – (PRI-HS, depending on teacher use) Students are given a workspace and set of polygons of different sizes and colors. Students can create designs that meet teacher specified criteria such as # of vertices, lines of symmetry, etc. (Strand 4: Geometry and Measurement, Concept 1: Geometric Properties)
Math Cats: OBBL Architecture Blocks - (INT/MS) Students choose shapes to add to a building board to create designs, objects, other shapes, etc. The challenge is that these shapes "fall" down the workspace. Students must discover ways to arrange the shapes to prevent the falls. (Standard 4: Geometry and Measurement, Concept 1: Geometric Properties)
Exploring Geometric Solids and Their Properties - (INT/MS) This lesson includes a teacher page, as well as a link to a student version and a printable worksheet for students to use as they complete the five parts of the investigation. Students analyze 3-dimensional shapes and solve problems related to their observations. (Strand 4: Geometry and Measurement, Concept 1: Geometric Properties, PO 3,4)
Geometric Hidden Picture Game - (INT) Students match geometric words with the physical representation in a puzzle to uncover a hidden picture. (Strand 4: Geometry and Measurement, Concept 1: Geometric Properties, PO 1,4,6,7)
Understanding the Pythagorean Relationship Using Interactive Figures - (MS/HS) This interactive lesson is a proof of the Pythagorean relationship. Students manipulate geometric figures to demonstrate the Pythagorean relationship. The link opens the teacher page. There are stand-alone applets that the students will use in the classroom or lab as the teacher directs the lesson. (Strand 4: Geometry and Measurement, Concept 1: Geometric Properties)
Investigating the Properties of Polygons - Using geoboards students make and compare a variety of polygons, describing the salient properties of the shapes they create. (Strand 4: Geometry and Measurement, Concept 1: Geometric Properties)
MAP Learning Continuum--Mathematics Measurement
Angle Tool - (MS/HS) Students can use this interactive tool to classify angles by measure and position. (Strand 4: Geometry and Measurement, Concept 1: Geometric Properties)

Learn About Symmetry -(MS) This site will help middle school students learn about symmetry. (Strand 4: Geometry and Measurement, Concept 2: Transformation of Shapes)
Floor Tiles -- A Tessellation Generator - (PRI/INT/MS) This interactive tool allows students to create a quadrilateral, then tessellate the shape. Introduces the idea of tessellations and symmetry. (Strand 4: Geometry and Measurement, Concept 2: Transformation of Shapes)
Creating Regular Tessellations - (INT/MS) Students complete hands-on activities online and with pattern blocks. The Tessellation Tool can be used to translate and rotate triangles to create tessellations. There is also a link to the teacher lesson plan. (Strand 4: Geometry and Measurement, Concept 2: Transformation of Shapes, PO 1 and 2)
Pentominoes - Shape Transformations - (INT/MS) Students participate in an online activity rotate and flip a set of pentomino shapes to fit in a rectangular box. (Strand 4: Geometry and Measurement, Concept 2: Transformation of Shapes, PO 1 and 2)
Understanding Congruence, Similarity, and Symmetry Using Transformations - (INT/MS)This multiple-day interactive lesson allows students to explore geometric transforms and construct understanding about congruence, similarity, and symmetry. The link opens the teacher page. There are stand-alone applets that the students will use in the classroom or lab as the teacher directs the lesson. (Strand 4: Geometry and Measurement, Concept 2: Transformation of Shapes)

An Introduction to the Coordinate Plane - (INT-HS) This tutorial provides a visual understanding of the coordinate plane. (Strand 4:Geometry and Measurement, Concept 3: Coordinate Geometry)
Coordinate Graphing - (MS/HS) Students have the opportunity to learn the basics of coordinate graphing in this interactive lesson. (Strand 4:Geometry and Measurement, Concept 3: Coordinate Geometry)

MAP Learning Continuum--Mathematics Measurement
Perimeter Explorer - (INT/MS) This interactive tool allows students to find the perimeter for a given figure. (Strand 4:Geometry and Measurement, Concept 4: Measurement)
It's About Time - (PRI/INT) This site has lessons for teaching about the history of time, the parts of a clock, and how to tell time. There is an interactive game where students tell time using both digital and analog clocks. (Strand 4: Geometry and Measurement, Concept 4: Measurement)
Math Cats: How Much Is It? - (INT/MS) Three tables ask "How long is it?", "How much does it weight?", "What is the volume?". Students enter a value in one unit of measure. The program then converts that measure to other standard and metric units. Students gain experience comparing the various values. (Strand 4: Geometry and Measurement, Concept 4: Measurement (Units of Measure))
Time Flies - (INT/MS) An on-line activity in which students learn to convert 12-hour time into 24-hour time. They then apply this as they act as an air traffic controller and help planes land. There is also a group activity to do in the classroom. There are links to the student activities (on-line and group), a teacher page, and a link to information about the author. (Strand 4: Geometry and Measurement, Concept 4: Measurement)
Plane Capacity - (INT/MS) This is an activity in which students use weight and volume to determine how many passengers and how much cargo a plane can carry. Includes on-line and hands-on activities, including group activities. The site has links for the student activities, a teacher page, and a link to information about the author. (Strand 4: Geometry and Measurement, Concept 4: Measurement (Units of Measure))
Flight Path - (INT/MS) This is an activity in which students plan and measure a flight path from San Francisco to New York and back. Some of the lesson is conducted on the Internet, and some of the lesson is hands-on in the classroom. Students work independently and in groups. The site has links to the student activities, a teacher page, and a link to information about the author. Students will need maps of the US with a scale on them and rulers. (Strand 4: Geometry and Measurement, Concept 4: Measurement)
Metric Conversions - This site provides handy tools to convert to and from metric. (Strand 4: Geometry and Measurement, Concept 4: Measurement) |
