A Girl Named Disaster by Nancy Farmer

Both the mother and the father of Nhamo, the girl named disaster, have died. The people of Nhamo's village in Mozambique have been hit hard by cholera. Many have died. Why? The muvuki, or seer, says that the ngozi, or angry spirit of Nhamo's father who murdered and then was killed, has caused the people in her village to die. To appease the ngozi, Nhamo must be the third wife of Go're-a diseased and cruel man. Nhamo's dying grandmother convinces Nhamo to escape by boat down Mkumburz River, across Lake Labora Bassa into Zimbabwe. On her way to freedom, Nhamo faces wild animals, danger, and near starvation. She also becomes aware of the spirits of the land. Find out more by reading, A Girl Named Disaster by Nancy Farmer.
