The Giver by Lois Lowry

Can the world be perfect? Jonas lives in a "perfect" world-no war, no fear, no pain, no choice. The Giver assigns each person his or her role in the Community. When Jonas turns 12, he is chosen by the Giver for special training. He is to hold the memories, of color, of choice, of pleasure and pain. I can't tell you the ending of this book, but it is something you are sure to wonder about after you read it. The author, Lois Lowry, refuses to answer questions about the ending of this book. She says,

"I really believe that every reader creates his/her own book, bringing to the written words their own experiences, dreams, wishes, passions. For me to EXPLAIN everything from my own viewpoint limits that experience for the reader."
