Astronomy

(1 cr., 2 semesters) Prerequisite: Algebra II, Physics. Astronomy is a wonderful subject which requires a great deal of independent student work. This is a lab science class and about 50% of the labs will take place on computer. Topics include: the history, techniques, and tools of astronomy; planetary science including planet formations, properties, and processes (research paper required); stars (physical properties based on the birth, life and death cycle of stars); galaxies (The Milky Way, clusters and super clusters); cosmology (black holes, wormholes and universal birth theories). There will be optional observing nights using the school's two telescopes at Catalina State Park as well as a field trip to the University of Arizona.
