The Early Childhood Center is a laboratory preschool for the Early Childhood Education program at CDO. Our Lead Preschool Instructor is Arizona certified in Elementary Education and has had 25 years of experience in preschool and elementary education.
The mission of Family and Consumer Sciences Education is to prepare students for family life, work life, and careers in Family and Consumer Sciences by providing opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors needed for:
Strengthening the well-being of individuals and families across the life span. Becoming responsible citizens and leaders in family, community, and work settings. Promoting optimal nutrition and wellness across the life span. Managing resources to meet the material needs of individuals and families.
Balancing personal, home, family, and work lives. Using critical and creative thinking skills to address problems in diverse family, community, and work environments. Successful life management, employment, and career development. Functioning effectively as providers and consumers of goods and services. Appreciating human worth and accepting responsibility for one's actions and success in family and work life.

Life 101
This introductory course provides students with practical application and problem-solving skills they'll use throughout their lives. Topics include personal development and relationship skills, child development and parenting, clothing and textiles, housing and interiors, nutrition and food choices, management skills (time/money), consumer choices and career exploration. Students' self-awareness, leadership skills and technology skills are developed through a variety of classroom activities, labs, action projects and club. Students enrolled in the course become members of the FCCLA (Family, Careers and Community Leaders of America) club providing opportunities for school and community activities.
Early Childhood Education 101, 201, 301
Students will need a TB skin test (negative) before working with young children.
These courses are recommended for students interested in careers related to education, counseling, health, human/social services, parenting. Learn practical ways to guide children through a variety of daily experiences in safe, educational ways. Plan and teach art, storytelling, dramatic play, science and nature, music, and cooking activities to children ages 3-5 or in grades K-3. Create teaching games and materials, bulletin boards, puppets. All students apply practical skills by working during the class period with children at area preschools and elementary schools.
