Four-Year Programs The faculty of the Canyon del Oro Foreign Language Department has developed four-year programs in French, German and Spanish. All programs offer students opportunities to gain a solid foundation in a language other than English. This is a career skill considered invaluable by those who recognize the advantage of second language communication skills in culturally and linguistically diverse economies. Curriculums stress oral proficiency, including skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking. Our graduates consistently do well in AP and CLEP exams at university entrance. The Faculty Department Chair Ana Potter and her ten department colleagues regularly attend the annual University of Arizona Language Symposium, the Arizona Language Association's annual conference and workshops, and the annual Southwest Conference on Language Teaching. Department members travel extensively in countries in which these languages are spoken. Faculty are also represented as members of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. Facing the challenge of teaching foreign language in the block schedule,
teachers assemble each month and during the summer to update and redesign
the traditional curriculum, to share ideas and find more and better
ways to make the best use of classroom time.
