The Canyon del Oro High School Library is having an excellent close to the 2007 – 2008 School year. We have several fun events happening before the school year closes.
We are having a book checkout contest in celebration of Project Graduation’s 2008 theme: Indiana Jones. The student who checks out the 12,008th book for the school year will win a prize pack valued at over $80.00. This package includes a DVD set of the three Indiana Jones movies, a new graphic novel, tickets to see the new Indian Jones movie in May, and movie night snacks.
April is National Library Month. We would like to invite all CDO parents to the April 8th Amphi School Board Meeting at 7 pm to support our district libraries. We would also like to invite parents to stop by the CDO Library for a visit anytime during April.
Seniors with library books need to have all their materials turned back into the library by May 2nd. Freshmen, sophomores and juniors will be asked to have their library materials returned by May 16th. Seniors who have not returned books or paid fines will be approached by the library staff and need to have things taken care of before graduation. Any Freshman, Sophomore or Junior who has a fine or book checked out after the end of the school year will need to return the book or pay the fine before they can go through registration. Library books can be returned to the CDO switchboard or bookstore through office hours during the summer. The library will be closed during the summer months. Students with fines and overdue books will receive a letter at home in May letting parents know what is checked out and owed.
As the year draws to a close and final projects are due or grades need a boost of help, don’t forget to make use of the evening tutoring program available through the CDO Library. We are open from 3:30 – 7:30 P.M. on Monday evenings and from 3:30 -5:30 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. We have tutors who can assist with math, physics, biology, English, Spanish, AIMS and history. For more information call the CDO Library at 696-5710.
A big THANK YOU to our parents, who also work in our library: Pam Lyons (library assistant) and Lisa Winn (library clerk). They make the library a friendly learning environment for our CDO students and we couldn’t do our jobs without both of them. We would also like to extend a thank you to the CDO PTO for all their support this year.
Don’t forget to keep reading over the summer. The public libraries will be open to serve your library needs while we are on summer vacation. The following announcements are from the area public libraries:
Nanini Library: April 12th, Saturday 2-3 pm Observe National Poetry Month and get in touch with your inner poet! We’ll learn to write a Haiku (short Japanese poem) and then we’ll write the finished poem on a colorful flag for display at the library. May 17th, Saturday 2-4 pm Calling all Teen Volunteers! Today we’ll have a training and orientation for teens interested in volunteering for the summer. If you are curious to see what is new be sure to look at the new books display located near the circulation desk. It is refreshed often and you are likely to see something you’d like to read. Besides an excellent selection of fiction we’ve been receiving a lot of nonfiction books on math and science lately. Come check them out.
We are currently sponsoring the AIMS Math Question of the Week until the AIMS Math Exam in April. This is a fantastic way for students to review AIMS math questions. Each week, all the correct responses are entered into a drawing to win a $20.00 gift card from Barnes and Noble, and at the end, the student who enters the most correct responses will win a grand prize of an MP3 player and other goodies.
CDO Library will also be celebrating Black History Month in February. There will be a display featuring the literary works of African American Authors such as Walter Dean Myers, Toni Morrison, Richard Wright, Alice Walker and many others. In addition, Love of Reading Week is the second week of February. Some recently published studies have found that more reading time helps improve use of the English language. Please encourage your CDO student to find something they love to read and have him/her come into the CDO Library for suggestions. We’d love to help however we can.

The CDO Library is open for the 2007 - 2008 school year and off to a rolling start. We would like to welcome a new member to the library staff. Lisa Winn is working in the book processing room and with the audio-visual supplies. We are thrilled to have Lisa working with us.
The library is looking better than ever with the new light fixtures put in during the summer recess. We have already had several interesting displays put out by Pam Lyons and we invite student groups to use the display space in the library to show projects they are working on. Come see a librarian if you have any questions or call David Alzner at 696-5770 if you would like to talk about having a display in the library.
In addition to the new lighting, during the summer we received two Smart Boards with projectors in our computer labs to assist teachers when teaching technology. Smart Boards are like white boards that the teacher can touch to make them come alive. In addition, we are expecting 35 new computers in the next few months to totally revamp one of our labs.
The evening tutoring program is off to an excellent start this year. We will continue to serve the population of CDO with tutoring available on Monday nights from 3:30 - 7:30 P.M. and tutoring from 3:30 - 5:30 P.M. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. The library promptly closes at 3:45 P.M. on Fridays after school. We would like to welcome new tutor Tyson Sprayberry who tutors science and biology on Tuesday evenings. We also welcome back Casey Smythe who tutors English on Monday evenings. To see a schedule of tutors, subjects and times you can call the library at 696-5710 or you can check here.
The Library Club is also up and running. Meetings are usually the first and third Wednesday of each month during tutorial time beginning at 2:25 pm in the library. This club will be swapping music, discussing books, and making recommendations to the library for improvements. Anyone can join. Please check the calendar on the library's homepage for dates.
We have a few events coming up to promote library use. The first is Banned Books Week (October1-5), which celebrates students’ rights to read freely in a free society. We will have book displays about what book banning is and why students should be aware of all forms of censorship in our society. This year the theme is pirates/buried treasure with the slogan, “Treasure Your Freedom to Read.” Students who check out books that have been challenged or banned will receive a prize. Some of the most banned titles you may recognize: Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, and To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee are just a few.
Another event is Teen Read Week (October 15-19). The theme this year is, “Laugh Out Loud.” Comedian and Arizona Daily Star Cartoonist David Fitzsimmons will be performing at 2:25 PM on Tuesday, October 16th, in the CDO Library. Seating will be limited and first come first served. There will also be opportunities to link our students with the public library during this fun week.
Speaking of our public library, both local public libraries have events they’d love parents and students to come to:
The Oro Valley Public Library will have Overcoming Adversity and Living Life by Vinny Integlia on Saturday, October 6th, from 2:00 – 3:00 pm and Sex Ed for Parents (Real Life, Real Talk) on October 25th at 6:30 pm. Please call 229-5300 for more information.
The Nanini Public Library will have on Saturdays in October (6th, 13th, 20th, and 27th) at 2pm-Every Picture Tells a Graphic Story: Cartooning for Teens. Create cartoon characters and develop a story. We will explore cartooning as a storytelling medium and be able to post cartoon panels online on the library webpage's TeenZone. Program led by local artist Ashley Friend. Register for program at Nanini Library Information desk at 791-4626, and on Saturday, November 17th at 10:00 am there will be Teen Library Advocate Training. Teens receive training about library resources and they agree to make five presentations in order to promote those resources to community groups. Upon completing five presentations, advocates are paid $100.00. |
