MathTips for Parents to better help children succeed!

Math expectations have changed a great deal over the past years. Students face significant challenges at younger ages than in the past. At the center of almost every Arizona math standard is the need to have a solid understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts. Students, who have a working knowledge of their facts, most often do well in math and flourish as the years' progress. Those that do not have a working knowledge, may become frustrated, struggle or even fall behind.
As educators, we encourage you to work with your child over the summer (and during the school year) to help them know their basic facts. By helping your child learn their math facts, they will be more empowered to answer math questions without having to labor over problems to get answers. Knowledge builds confidence and your child will be better able to utilize his or her fact knowledge to learn new skills. He or she will not be frustrated and will be willing to do their work at school.
To help your student learn or keep their math facts, flash cards maybe utilized. Listening to musical rap tapes may be another way to help your child learn. Scientists have said that playing these tapes or CD's while the child sleeps can help in the learning process. Math games may be played with dice, on the computer, or whatever way interests your child and works for your family situation. There are math links provided below to help your child practice and learn. Please realize that regular practice is essential for your child to maintain or progress to more advanced math skills, strategies and challenges.
