About El Hogar
El Hogar is part of an Alternative program in Amphitheater District. It has students from different middle and high schools within the Amphi District. Students come to El Hogar because they have been suspended from their home schools. If the students want to continue their education and make a difference in their lives, El Hogar may be the answer. Success is in the hands of students.

There are two components to education at El Hogar.
  • 1. Academic base Learning

  • 2. Life skills base learning

Academic base learning
In academic base learning teachers and staff at EL Hogar make sure that student meet their academic standard and will be able to function when they go back to their home school after completing their suspension.

There are three components to Academic base learning:

  • 1. Small classes: Classes at El Hogar are smaller than a traditional classroom. In each class every teacher is assigned a number of students based on performance and individual needs.

  • 2. Selfpaced lerning: Selfpaced learning includes odysseyware and packets.

    • A. Odysseyware is a webbased learning program where students log in to their individual accounts and do their assigned work.

    • B. Packet based learning is where students are assigned packets for a subject to earn a credit.

  • 3. Individual learning: When a student can work individually on an assignment and a teacher can be helping the rest of the class.

  • Life Skills Base Learning
In Life Skills Base learning students work with their teacher to learn different skills which is part of their vocational training. They also participate in Personal Growth classes to work on their emotional issues.

Life Skills base learning have two components:

  • 1. Community Service

  • 2. Personal Growth

  • 1. Community Service

Each student at El Hogar is required to do Community Service as part of their suspension. Community Service hours are earned through their vocational training which include Green House, Bench Project and Digital Future.

  • Green House

  • Green House Project is something students take pride in. Green House is located next to their school. It has become a big project for the past couple of years. Before it was a site, it was a dump. There were piles of old cars and truck parts, old refrigerators and a bunch of scrap metal. Students came up with an idea to clean it up, and make it a Green House. With the help Americorp Volunteer and team work from El Hogar Students, now it is a place that students are proud of. They grow veggies and different types of plants and plant them in their garden.

  • Bench Project

  • Students also work on building Martin Luther King Benches with Martin Luther King quotes silk screened on the back of them. These benches are built from kits which students have developed with the help of teachers and staff at El Hogar. Each kits contain everything needed to built a bench and it makes work go much faster and smoother. Once finish these benches are donated to schools and Non-profit organizations around town.

  • Digital Futures Team

  • El Hogar students work with Digital Futures Team at Canyon Del Oro High School to design school projects for different Amphithear Schools. They learn how to use video cameras, live aduio, edit shots, and make music from garage band. The Digital Futures team also works in the field to cover different events in the community.

    2. Personal Growth

Students discuss their everyday social and emotional issues and try to find a solution to these situations.
