Class Policies*

what you need

  • scientific calculator (NOT graphing; NOT programmable; MUST have "EE" or "EXP" key)

  • pencil

  • 3-ring binder

  • cell phones and all other electronic devices, except approved calculators, seen or heard in class result in a grade of "0" for the day's activities, including tests

when it's due

All chemistry assignments are due the next day when the bell rings to begin class. Assignments not turned in at this time receive a grade of "0." Special projects, etc. will have assigned due dates discussed in class.

grades

Semester grades are based on the following items:

  • 10% HW & CW quizzes / miscellaneous: HW is not usually graded; a HW quiz is used to assess the homework—completion of ALL homework is required in order for the quiz grade to be counted, if ALL homework is not completed, the quiz grade for that section = “0”; CW quizzes can occur at any time; they cover the current class material; miscellaneous items consist of individual / small group projects, small labs, etc; other items in this category include small labs (without quizzes), projects, etc.

  • 60%tests; four or five are given each semester; all tests are cululative; the final exam is the last test in this group

  • 30% labs and lab quizzes; the lab grade is obtained from the lab and the lab quiz combined.

  • grades are updated ~every 2 weeks

make-up grades

this policy applies to tests and labs missed due to excused absences; when a test or lab is missed, the grade for the missed item is obtained from the next test or lab; at the end of the semester, the final exam grade will substitute in for any missing items

no make-up is required for HW / CW quizzes; the grade is apportioned for the completed items; if more than half of a quiz is missed then the same make-up policy for tests and labs is used

at grade report time items that are missing due to excused absences are not included in the printed progress report; the grade report will indicate that the student has “make-up work pending”

help for student

Conference period is provided as a time when students may receive extra help and/or clarification of topics and problems discussed in class. It is offered on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. Other limited, pre-arranged times can be arranged. The IRHS National Honor Society and the Oro Valley Library offer free tutoring.

safety
list of safety rules

Each student and parent/guardian has read and signed the safety rules. The rules are the only warning provided. Violation of these rules will result in removal from the lab area, a permanent zero on the lab, and administrative notification.

miscellaneous

*This information is merely a guide to chemistry policies; it is not all encompassing. On occasion, a rule or the syllabus may need to be adjusted, added or deleted. In this event, the change will be announced in class.

instructor's personal note

*While I welcome parent communication via email, phone, and/or appointments, please be aware that the best and most efficient use of my time as a teacher is for me to communicate directly with your child. If you have any concerns, please have your child talk with me first. This would include concerns about grades, absences (including pre-arranged), make-up work, etc. Once this occurs, if you still have concerns, please contact me. There is no need to contact me regarding future / current absences and/or future / current homework. These need to go through the attendance office.
