Syllabus*

A variety of chemistry topics are presented each year. They vary slightly between general, honors, and AP chemistry. However, the depth of the topics discussed is significant. Below is a brief outline of general chemistry topics covered. They are listed during the month that they have usually been introduced. However, this school year, the order of these topics could be changed. Most topics, onced introduced are used throughout the school year.

August

significant figures, error, graphical analysis, unit conversions, (AZ standards:1-1,2,4,6)[all year]

September

classification of matter, density (AZ standards:5-1,2,4) subatomic particles, isotopic symbols, atomic mass calculations, the periodic table, the mole, formulas, compound calculations, balancing, qualitative reactions, (AZ standards: 5-1,4,5)

October

stoichiometry, molarity, (AZ standards: 5-2,4,5)

November

gas properties, KM theory, laws, stoichiometry, (AZ standards:1-5; 2-5; 5-1,2,6)

December

thermochemistry, thermostoichiometry, calorimetry, (AZ standards: 5-3,4

January

history, quantum numbers, configurations, periodicity, bond types, basic geometry, polarity (AZ standards: 2-1,2,4,5,6; 5-1,2,6)

February

intermolecular forces, phase changes, solution formation, solubility, colligative properties (AZ standards: 5-1,2,3,4,5,6)

March

rates, collision theory, equilibrium concepts(AZ standards: 5-1,2,3,4,5,6)

April

acid/base properties, reactions, kw calculations, pH, titration curves, oxidation numbers, redox reactions, voltaic and electrolytic cells (AZ standards: 5-1,3,5)

April/May

radioactive particles, nuclear reactions, half-life, radiation effects and uses, organic chemistry, AZ standards: 6-4)

*A syllabus is a working document. The above is a probable time frame for the introduction of topics. However, it is subject to changes.
