Current Events Read Alouds!

Begin reading class each day with a current events read aloud.
This will help students with, among other things:
  • background knowledge
  • vocabulary development
  • connections
  • global awareness
  • reading fluency

  • Helpful Tips
You will do the read aloud at the beginning of class, then conduct your reading lesson, and conclude (time permitting) with a "fiction" read aloud.(See the list of suggested novels below.)

    Prior to class:

  • Find a good article. (See links below.)
  • Read the article.
  • Identify vocab (one or two key words: words necessary to understand the topic)
  • Put the vocab words on the board
  • Generate one or two knowledge and comprehension questions

  • During Class:
  • Ask a focus question
  • Point out vocabulary so they can listen for the words
  • Read the article aloud. NOTE: if article is long, could be read over more than one day
  • Ask the questions/discuss article
