Grading Policies

Grading Rubrics
Art is a very subjective content area and therefore hard to grade without setting up a grading rubric with clear guidelines. All projects have their own rubric when it comes to the learning objective and project expectations. Every project also has a behavior/participation rubric. Below is a general description of both:
Individual project Rubric

  • A or E-Student completes the project according to assignment guidelines, but goes above and beyond by adding manypersonal elements to demonstrate synthesis of: concepts, elements of art emphasized, and appropriate use of materials with excellentcraftsmanship.

  • B or S+-Student completes the project according to assignment guidelines, adding somepersonal elements to demonstrate synthesis of: concepts, elements of art emphasized, and appropriate use of materials with goodcraftsmanship.

  • C or S-Student completes the project following assignment guidelines to the letter: adding no personal elements, demonstrates basic understanding of concepts and elements of art emphasized, and appropriate use of materials with some sloppycraftsmanship.

  • D or S--Student does not complete the project following assignment guidelines: demonstrates some understanding of concepts and elements of art emphasizes, inappropriate use of materials with sloppycraftsmanship.

  • F -Student does not complete the project following assignment guidelines given: cannot demonstrate any understanding of the concepts or elements of art emphasized, inappropriate or unsafe use of materials, and craftsmanship is deliberatelysloppy.

Behavior/Participation Rubric

  • A or E-Student follows classroom behavior guidelines, participates positively in class discussions, and uses class time to complete work. This student always respects the classroom workplace and does not deliberately distract others.

  • B or S+-Student follows classroom behavior guidelines, participates positively in classroom discussions, and uses class time most of the time to complete work. This student mostly respects the classroom as a workplace and does not intentionally distract others.

  • C or S-Student does not always follow classroom behavior guidelines, sometimes participates in class discussions, and does not always use class time given to complete work. This student sometimes forgets the classroom is a workplace and may distract others.

  • D or S--Student does not follow classroom behavior guidelines often, rarely participates in class discussions, and only sometimes uses class time to complete work. This student does not show respect for the classroom as a workplace and often distracts others.

  • F-Student never follows the classroom behavior guidelines, never participates in classroom discussions, and rarely uses class time to work on projects. This student does not show any respect for the classroom workplace and deliberately distracts others.

Students in grades K through 1st grade are graded on a Standards Based report card system.  Grades are based on mastery of ALL of the art standards for that grade level for the entire year.  Students cannot receive a 3 (meets the standards) until ALL of the standards are taught for the entire year.  Most students can expect to receive 2's until the 4th quarter.
