Medication Procedures
Prescription Medications
When it is necessary for a student to receive a prescription medication during the school day, the following procedure has been established to ensure the protection of the school and the student and to ensure compliance with existing rules and regulations:
Administration by school personnel:
- The medication must be prescribed by a licensed prescriber
- The parent of legal guardian must provide written permission to administer the medication to the student. Appropriate forms are available from the school office or online. If the parent or legal guardian has not completed the appropriate form there must be written or verbal permission to give the medication for one day; there after the appropriate form must be on file.
- The medication must come to the school office in the original container properly labeled with the student’s name, medication name, the dosage, and the time it is to be given.
- An administrator may designate a school employee to administer the medication where there is no nurse.
- The number of doses for any prescription medication received must be counted and recorded on the District “Medication Record”.
- Each dose administered must be documented on the District “Medication Record” in the school’s medication sign off book.
- Medications must be kept in their original container in a locked cabinet or in the refrigerator if directed.
Non-Prescription Medications:
When it is necessary for a student to receive a medication that does not require a prescription order, (such as Tylenol, cough drops, throat spray etc.) the following procedure has been established to ensure the protection of the school and student:
- Written permission must be provided by the parent or legal guardian for the administration of specific non-prescription medications. Appropriate forms may be obtained in the school office or online.
- Any non-prescription medication sent by the parent or legal guardian to be administration to a student must come to the school office in the original, unopened manufacturer's packaging with all directions, dosages, compound contents, and proportions clearly marked.Any variance from the label must have written permission from a physician.
- A physician's order is needed for the administration of Aspirin.
- An administrator may designate a school employee to administer the medication where there is no nurse.
- A Health Aide/Assistant or school employee (other than an R.N.) designated by an administrator may not administer non-prescription medication without consulting with a parent or legal guardian or the Director of Health Services.
- Each administration of a non-prescription medication must be documented on the appropriate District "Medication Record".
- Non-prescription medication must be kept in its original container in a locked medicine cabinet.
- Non-prescription medication will not be given for more than three consecutive days without an order from a physician.
Self-administration:
- Necessity for self-administration of prescription medication shall be determined by the student's physician. The physician shall provide written recommendations to be attached to the parent or legal guardian permission form, indicating the specific medication.
EXCEPTIONS: In case of medication for diagnosed anaphylaxis and breathing disorders requiring handheld inhaler devices.
- In the cases the student's name on the prescription label is sufficient for the physicians recommendations.
- The parent or legal guardian must provide written permission for the student to self-administer and carry the medication. Appropriate forms are available from the school office or online.
- The medication must come in the original prescription container as put up by the pharmacist.
Protection of students
Use or administration of medication on the school premises may be disallowed or strictly limited if it is determined by the Superintendent, in consultation with medical personnel, a threat of abuse or misuse of the medication may pose a risk of harm to a member of the student population.
The student shall take an extraordinary precautions to keep secure any medication, and Under no circumstances shall make available, provide, or give the medication to another person. The student shall immediately report the loss or theft of any medication brought onto school campus. Violation of this regulation may subject the student to disciplinary action.
