Homework Information

Reading
Your child's most important homework is to read twenty minutes everyday. Your child should be reading materials at his/her independent level. We will visit the school library every other week and I will assist your child in finding books at his/her level. Other materials your child may choose to read include magazines, newspapers, technical manuals, poetry, and/or any other materials that sustains his/her interest. A Painted Sky reading calendar will be sent home at the beginning of every month. Please keep a daily record of your child's minutes on these calendars. Have your child return the calendar to school at the end of each month.
Once each quarter your child will have a book report to complete. Information will be sent home with plenty of advance notice on requirements and due dates.

Math
Painted Sky uses a math program called Everyday Math. After each lesson there is a daily homework assignment called "Homelink" that reinforces what students practiced at school. These Homelinks are designed for parents to be involved with their child's homework. Most students would have difficulty doing these independently. To help families with these Homelinks, Everyday Math publishes a "Family Letter" that is sent home with the students at the beginning of each unit. These are very helpful and the answers to the Homelinks are given. If you misplace your "Family Letter", you can go to the Everyday Math link on my webpage to view an electronic version. Occasionaly your child will receive additional math worksheets for homework.
In addition to the Homelinks, your child will have a daily "Mad Minute" to practice thier basic math facts. The Mad Minute homework requires parents to be involved with the timing and scoring. We will start with addition and then move through subtraction followed by multiplication and division. The focused facts will change weekly.

Contracts
Every quarter your child will complete a learning contract at home. These are designed to help your child learn how to complete long term projects by budgeting their weekly time. The themes of the contracts will be related to our studies at school. I always assign "Work on Contract" for homework on Tuesdays.
