Unit 1.1 Learning Science

Homework assigned for tomorrow: Know the Five Skills of Learning Science and the LOS terms and be ready to describe them in a quiz.
Learning Objectives for the lesson:
BTEOTLYSBAT: Know the basics about Copper team science class.
Purpose of the lesson:
Welcome and meet the students. Introduce the students to classroom P & P and expectations.
Lesson procedures and activities:
1. Greet all students, have students find seats. This instruction will be on the board and TV monitor (power point). (5 min)
2. Introduce self to class, tour classroom. (10 min)
3. Distribute and review handouts. Emphasize the five Skills of Learning Science (20)
4. LOS- Schema, learning styles (20)
Methods of assessing student learning:
1. On Friday, (8/11) students will take 25-point quiz to assess knowledge of policies, Skills and LOS.
2. Also on Friday, students will reflect on class “so far,” and describe their first impressions of Copper Science class.
Accommodations for special needs students:
Special needs students have not been identified at this time.

First day of class; no standards addressed. Instruction that applies to standards begins on Monday, 8/14/06.

Students will be assessed on their comprehension of the Skills of Learning Science, LOS terms, and class procedures
Lesson procedures and activities:
1. Greet Students, Review procedures. (5 min)
2. Review SOL, LOS (10 min)
3. Quiz!! (15)
4. Current event assignment. (5)
5. Descriptive writing, your favorite food (10)
Methods of assessing student learning:
1. Today students will take 10-point quiz to assess knowledge of policies, Skills and LOS.

Homework assigned for tomorrow: Write about your favorite food, using at least four characteristics of technical writing discussed in class.
Learning Objectives for the lesson:
BTEOTLYSBAT: Know the characteristics of technical writing.
Purpose of the lesson:
Students will understand the characteristics of descriptive writing, and reading.
Lesson procedures and activities:
1. Review the past two days, AOK? (5 min)
2. Behavior Plan.(5 min)
3. LOS review. (2 min)
4. Technical writing activity with newspapers, magazines, textbooks, etc. Class divided into groups of four (10 research, 10 reporting)
5. Students make list of technical writing characteristics in their journals.(10)
Methods of assessing student learning:
1. Students will submit their description of their favorite food on Wednesday, 8/16
Accommodations for special needs students:
Special needs students may use extended time for this assignment.

Students will understand the characteristics of descriptive writing, and reading.
Lesson procedures and activities:
1. Review characteristics of technical writing. (5 min)
2. Students share their writings (20 min).
3. Picture map/Concept map activity about technical writing (25 min)
4. Sign-up for Science Reports

1. Students will submit their favorite foods description on Wednesday.
