CLASSROOM POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

Journal Writing
All students are expected to be in class on time, and ready to work. There will be a journal writing prompt on the screen as students arrive. They are to take their journals from the shelf and begin quietly writing as soon as the bell rings. Students are to write nonstop for 10 minutes. The writing prompts are often related to other work taking place in class that week. Journals will be checked weekly and students will receive a maximum of 25 points for the week, based on the quantity and quality of the writing produced.

Tardies
Students who are not in the room when the bell rings are to sign the Tardy Log. Unexcused tardies will result in loss of participation points, and lunch detention.

Homework
Homework is primarily reading for the reading logs, which are due every Thursday. Students are asked to read a minimum of two hours outside of school, record it on their logs, and have their parents sign the log. Reading logs count for 10% of the student's Reading class grade. Independent reading is one of the best ways for students to improve both their reading and their writing skills.
There are often DOL, vocabulary, or spelling quizzes on Friday. Students are expected to study for these quizzes throughout the week.
Most writing assignments will be done in class. Occasionally students will be asked to prepare rough drafts at home, that will then be completed in the computer lab.

Participation Points
Points are based on the following criteria:
- student begins working quietly as soon as the bell rings
- positive, cooperative attitude with the teacher and fellow students
- does not need to be corrected for inappropriate talking, noises, attitudes, etc.
- uses time well for journal writing and other class work
- follows all school and classroom rules and procedures
Each student begins with five points per day, and keeps those points if his participation is satisfactory in the above mentioned areas. Participation counts for 10% of a student's grade, in both Reading and Writing classes.

Reading
Whole-class oral reading (with discussion) and individual student reading are both large parts of what we do in Reading class. Also, students are to always have a book with them for independent reading time, which is built into the schedule several times a week. A written response is sometimes required.

Make-up Work
When a student is absent, it is his responsibility to ask me the next day about work that needs to be made up.

Behavior
Students are expected to show respect to the teacher and to their fellow classmates. A lack of respect will result in discipline procedures, as needed.
