As the "Keene Kids" enter 4th grade, they will be experiencing a "whole new world" in so many ways. One of the biggest changes in 4th grade is HOMEWORK! While I have scheduled "study skills" time for students to work on homework during the day, both students and parents should expect some homework nightly. If you find your child is taking longer than 45 minutes to complete his/her regular homework assignments, please contact me so we can work on some study/time management strategies to help him/her achieve success! :)

It is crucial that students learn "personal responsibility" and time management as soon as possible. These skills will help them greatly as they move through the intermediate grades and beyond. If work is forgotten, the student may try to complete the missing work by the end of the day and receive full credit, or turn it in the following day to receive an 11 point deduction. Work turned in more than one day late will be given a grade of 50%. Any homework not turned in by the end of the quarter will receive a zero. As always, there may be exceptions to this rule on an "as needed" basis(depending on the circumstances).

This policy is in place to help students learn to take responsibility for their own actions and encourage personal time management skills. I have found that it only takes a few forgotten assignments before the students are on track and turning in all their work! :)

As a parent myself, I understand that emergencies/situations do occasionally arise that may prevent your child from completing a homework assignment. Of course, I will take such situations into account on a case-by-case basis. However, please understand that regularly scheduled activities such as music lessons and sports practices, do not count as "emergencies."

Generally, homework for fourth grade students will consist of daily math worksheets, spelling and vocabulary, studying for any tests, and any work not completed during class. Students should write all homework assignments in their assignment books and have parents sign at the bottom of each page to indicate they have seen this. It is the students’ responsibility to ensure that their homework is completed and turned in on time.

ASSIGNMENT EXPECTATIONS: All assignments are to be neatly written or typed. Students should carefully check all assignments before they are turned in and review any rubrics or requirements provided by the teacher. All papers should include a heading in the upper right hand corner which includes:

Name #___
Date
Subject

NO NAME ASSIGNMENTS: Papers turned in with no names will receive a 10 point deduction from the final grade, if claimed. Those not claimed by the end of the week will be thrown away.

ABSENCES: If your child is absent, he/she will have the opportunity to make up the work. The policy states that a child will have one day for each day they were absent to make up the work. For example, if your child is absent two days, they will have two days to make up the work. If there is a problem in completing the missing work due to illness, please discuss this with the teacher to work out the details and set goals and time limits.

Thank you for your support!
