Our mission in the Learning Lab is for all students to "close the gap" between their level of learning and that of their general education peers. Students, parents and teachers must work together to ensure this happens. |
| The Learning Lab primarily supports students in the areas of reading, writing, math and behavioral/work ethic issues. Most students actually come to the Lab for assistance, but others receive support while remaining in their regular education classrooms. |
Reading & Language Arts Goals: |
Students will: 1. Use their brain as a pattern detector. 2. Learn various word recognition & decoding strategies. 3. Develop fluency. 4. Develop comprehension strategies. 5. Practice writing strategies.
Most students attend the Learning Lab for a 60-minute period of Reading/Language Arts four days per week. Older students may come for the 60-minute Reading block four days per week &/or come for 45-minute Directed Writing Lessons three days per week. During these sessions many skills will be addressed.. Students will utilize various resources to enhance their understanding. Directed Reading Activities and Writing lessons will be utilized to improve reading comprehension, fluency skills and writing skills and strategies.
|
Math Goals: |
Students will: 1. Increase basic fact knowledge. 2. Demonstrate understanding of the basic operations & number sense. 3. Read word problems and "pull-out" key facts, & determine the appropriate operation(s).
Most students who are placed for math help attend the Learning Lab for 30-minute periods, five days per week. Calculation skills are "hit hard". Group work as well as individual work is emphasized. Students have multiple opportunities to use manipulatives and technology to aid their math growth. Understanding of math vocabulary is addressed through solving word problems on a regular basis. Regular homework practice >- either through drill, computers activities, or with games (for minimum 15 minutes per night/ 5x's per week) is expected in order to achieve goals targeted in their IEP's.
|
Behavioral Goals: |
Students will: 1. Follow the School rules of being safe, being respectful & being responsible. 2. Listen and follow directions from adults in the classroom. 3. Complete their assignments with accuracy and turn them in on time. 4. Work cooperatively in small group situations. 5. Ask for help by asking "good" (quality) questions.
Students who are placed for behavioral or emotional reasons work on these skills while completing academic assignments.
Our students need to know that we all make mistakes, but it's what you do after the mistake that makes the difference! Read the following quote. It's still as true today as the day Mary Pickford said it!
If you have made mistakes...there is always another chance for you...you may have a fresh start any moment you choose, for this thing we call "failure" is not the falling down, but the staying down. Mary Pickford (1893-1979) Canadian Actress |
Purpose of Homework: |
| All Learning Lab Homework is a review of what occurred in class. Repeated practice will help your child be more successful. It also shows responsibility & ownership of one's learning. Our students need to learn how to get something from Point A to Point B & back - completed to the best of their abilities. That is why we track Homework completion. All Learning Lab homework requires a parent signature to note that an adult or parent saw it.(Please take that time to review your child's work & note concerns, "high fives", etc.) Also know that their homework practice counts toward their 70% minimum requirement to attend the Lunchtime Cartoon Party. This party is a reward for responsibility & effort. Student earn the opportunity to invite friends-that don't attend the Lab. Also the lack of homework practice & parent signature noting the student's effort will negatively affect grade(s) and progress.. |
Let's work together to help your child choose to make a "fresh start" and be successful at school and in their LIFE! |
