First Semester: Personal Experience Narrative Formal Communication: (letters, messages, directions, etc., addressing specific audience and using appropriate format) 5-Paragraph Essays Literary Response: Lit Study (outlines and drafts), Literary Reviews (outlines and drafts) Research Report Expository Essay (District Assessment) Speech/formal presentation (outlines and drafts) Prepare to publish pieces (may be a letter to a public newspaper, a published poem, a published essay etc.) Self and Peer Evaluations
Second Semester: Parenthetical annotated Summary Persuasive Essay (District Assessment) Thesis Project Examples of the modes of writing Inventions Project (February) Project Citizen Project 5-Paragraph Essays Literary Responses Newspaper item (Ink on Trees and a letter to editor for public paper) Speech/formal presentation (outlines or drafts) Evaluations

Portfolio Guidelines |
Each student is to provide a 1" three ring notebook, that will be kept in the gray cabinet in the Language Arts classroom, and in which students will place finished/revised pieces of work, as well as final, graded assessments, that demonstrate their competency in the Arizona Standards. At the end of the school year, students will each bind their completed showcase portfolio, which will then be graded as part of their final exam for the class. Every student is expected to maintain an organized portfolio that includes all required items listed in the "Binder Guidelines."
