UNIT 01:

The first unit of Biology will acquaint you with biology and the scientific method,
which will be used throughout the course.

About Me: This sheet was handed out in class the first day of school. If you were not here the first day please fill it out and turn it in.

Expectancy Sheet: The expectancy sheet was given out the first day of class. Please read it over with your parent(s)/guardian(s), and then fill out the information on the back the following day. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me. The signed sheet is due back the following day after it was handed out.


Lab Safety Contract & Information Packet: The lab safety contract was given out the first day of class. It is to be signed and dated by both the student and his/her legal guardian(s) before the student can participate in any laboratory activities. The signed sheet is due back the following day after it was handed out. Failure to turn in the Lab Safety contract will result in your not being able to participate in any labs and therefore earning a zero for each missed lab.

UNIT 02:

The second unit of Biology will deal primarily with ecology. Please review chapters 02-05.

Bug Lab 01 Flour Beetle: This is the first handout for the beetle lab! This sheet contains basic information about these amazing creatures!

Bug Lab 03 Ohio State University Extension Fact Sheet: This is another sheet containing basic information about flour beetles. This sheet will further allow students to develop solid research questions for this inquiry lab investigation.

Bug Lab 04 Beetle Wrangling Tips: This handout gives basic information on the proper care and handling of flour beetles.

Bug Lab 05 Experimental Design: This handout gives the basic framework for students to develop their beetle experiment.

Semester Project: This project will take place over the course of the semester. Please note monthly due dates to stay on course.

Common Problems with Lab Reports: This is a handout created after students handed in their first lab report. This sheet should help students revised their first lab report so that they can get a better score when they turn in their revised report. Students should also refer to this when writing new lab reports. Please also review the information in the common problems with lab reports powerpoint.

Ecosystem Lab: This is the second lab in the ecology unit. Students will be taking data on this lab over a period of several months.

Abiotic Cycles Makeup Assignment: This is the makeup assignment for students who missed the abiotic cycles poster assignment.

Planet Earth - Pole to Pole Worksheet: This worksheet was handed out to accompany the first episode of Planet Earth that we viewed in class.

Biome Project Handout: The majority of this project will take place in class. Students will be presenting their finished projects in class.

Biology Unit 02 - Beetles Final: This lab wrap up will count as a lab report. Please make sure to do a complete job on this and follow all instructions.

UNIT 03:

The is the final unit in the first semester. It will cover the bio-chemistry, anatomy and physiology of the cell. The cell is the basic unit of all living things.

Biology Unit 03 - Study Guide: More than simply a study guide this handout details everything that will occur during the third unit / second quarter. In addition to listing all of the required readings and vocabulary it also gives a day by day schedule of the unit. Please note that this schedule is subject to change due to student need. Changes will be reflected on the website and in class.


Biology Unit 03 - Study Guide: These are the notes that will be given during the chemistry section of this unit. Please refer to chapter 06 for more information.

Molecular Models Lab & Project: This is the first lab in this unit. It also includes a project, where students will be building macromolecule mobiles!

Unit 03 - Separating Substances Lab: This demonstration allows students to see the differences between mixtures and solutions first hand.

pH Lab: This lab allows students to learn about pH. We will only be doing this lab if time permits.

Cell Project: Students will work with a partner to build a creative cell using recycled materials (if possible).

History and Anatomy of Cells: Students will use this notetaker with chapter 7, parts 7.1 and 7.2 to help them learn about the history and anatomy of cells. In addition students will take notes on the cell and cell membrane on this sheet.

Cell is Like a City: This is a great way for students to learn the cell parts, but making analogies to a city!

Cell Microscope Lab structure and transport : Students will use light microscopes to observe changes in cells when cells are placed in different osmotic conditions.

Photosynthesis Lab : Students will examine the process of photosynthesis and compare it to cellular respiration by doing this exciting lab!

Cell Cycle and Cancer Projects : Students will use what they have learned to create either a paper or digital depiction of mitosis and then they will apply that to create a public service annoucement about cancer.

Summary Chart Template for Semester Project: Students will use this template to help them summarize the information they find in their research articles for the semester project.
