UNIT 01 The first unit of the course will acquaint students with environmental science; it introduces much of the important theory, philosophy, rhetoric, and terminology, which will be used throughout the course.
|
|
APES Survival Guide: The APES Survival Guide was given out the first day of class. It details the expectations of the course. Please read it over with your parent(s)/guardian(s), and then fill out the information on the back. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me. The signed sheet is due back the following day after it was handed out.

Lab Safety Contract: The lab safety contract was given out the first day of class. It is to be signed and dated by both the student and his/her legal guardian(s) before the student can participate in any laboratory activities. The signed sheet is due back the following day after it was handed out. Failure to turn in the Lab Safety contract will result in your not being able to participate in any labs and therefore earning a zero for each missed lab.

APES Unit 01 - Study Guide: More than simply a study guide this handout details everything that will occur during the first unit. In addition to listing all of the required readings and vocabulary it also gives a day by day schedule of the unit. Please note that this schedule is subject to change due to student need. Changes will be reflected on the website and in class.

Tragedy of the Commons: Written in 1968 and published in the journal, "Science" (Science, 162(1968):1243-1248.). The Tragedy of the Commons illustrates conflict and resource depletion in areas shared freely by individuals. This article will be used as a talking point in class.

|
Happy Fishing: A hands-on activity designed to simulate the tragedy of the commons.

Graphing Worksheet: This graphing excercise is important for two reasons. First, the APES exam has a strong math focus in at least a quarter of the essay questions, so this provides solid practice in interpreting graphs. Secondly it will help prepare students for their data analysis in the dilution lab.

|
Dilution Lab: A laboratory activity designed to familiarize students with the laboratory skills required to prepare a series of different concentrations of a solution. This skill will be used in later labs.

UNIT 02 The second unit of APES is an introduction to ecology - the study of how living organisms interact with one another and with their surroundings.
|
|
APES Unit 02 - Study Guide: More than simply a study guide this handout details everything that will occur during the second unit. In addition to listing all of the required readings and vocabulary it also gives a day by day schedule of the unit. Please note that this schedule is subject to change due to student need. APES Unit 02 - Math Practice Part 2 ART: A practice set for figuring out the average residence time (pages 48-49 in your text). You should NOT use a calculator for this worksheet as calculators are not allowed on the AP exam or on our unit exam. In addition to learning about ART this practice set is a nice review of unit conversions.

Owl Pellet Lab: This a wonderful lab that explores how food chains work by examining real owl pellets. So what is an owl pellet? Like many birds owls eat their food whole or in chunks since they cannot chew their food. After eating the owl will digest its food and then regurgitate hard indigestible items in the form of a pellet. The pellets tend to include items such as bones, fur and feathers.

Top of the Food Chain Article: This story is based on true events surrounding DDT use in Borneo. It contains an activity where students apply their knowledge of food chains.

Food Webbing Activity: This activity allows students to apply their knowledge of food webs to real organisms found in the Sonoran desert!

Oh Deer!: This lively activity simulates the boom and bust cycles of populations, which result from variations in habitat. In the activity, students will represent deer, as well as the habitat of the deer. Remember to wear comfy clothes on the day of this activity as we will all be running around. Oh deer!

APES Unit 04 - Tagging Lab: In order to fully understand the dynamics of an ecosystem, it is necessary to have a good idea of the size of each population in the ecosystem. Because it may be difficult or impossible to count each individual, tagging is a useful method for determining the size of an animal population. The first step of the process is to capture a known number of individuals from a population. The individuals are tagged and then released back into the population. After the tagged individuals have had time to assimilate back into the population, random samples of the population are captured. This lab is a great simulation that allows student to practice with the associated equations.
