Blood Diamonds in the Sierra Leone

“WFP’s operations in West Africa in the 1990s receive the Hollywood treatment in the new film, Blood Diamond, starring Leonardo di Caprio, Djimon Hounsou and Jennifer Connelly.

In the film, Leo plays a diamond smuggler in Sierra Leone, where a vicious civil war is raging. The film includes scenes showing realistic aid operations like the ones WFP carried out in the ‘90s while feeding thousands of war victims who fled within Sierra Leone and to neighbouring countries.

Djimon Hounsou and Jennifer Connelly shot a video announcement for WFP to tell people about the problem of hunger. is running in cinemas around the world with the movie to raise awareness about hunger and poverty still rife across the region.”
