Book Report Presentations and Weekly Reading Log Information
Book Report Information: Your child will be completing one book report presentation at home each quarter. I will teach book reporting through practicing reading and writing strategies with books we are reading in class.
Your child should be able to complete reading their book in class during Sustained Silent Reading time and Buddy Reading time, so the book needs to be at school each day.
If it looks like your child is unable to accomplish the daily assigned reading, I will write a note in the planner for your child to finish reading as homework.
We will be going to the library every Thursday, where your child will be able to check out two books for additional at home reading. The librarians and I will help your child select books at their reading level.
We will be concentrating on nonfiction reading and realistic fiction chapter books this school year.
A Weekly Reading Log is to be completed for the assigned A-Z Leveled Reading pamphlet sent home each Friday and due the following Thursday.
To be successful, students should read the nonfiction pamphlet 3-5 times, as a minimum, and finish the required log due each Thursday.
Each Friday, your child will be tested on comprehension of the material read. The weekly reading log will be lengthened as the students learn the reading strategies. Complete sentence answers are required and quality counts!
Parents, please sign the log each week and have your child return them to class each Friday, insuring that your child has read 100 minutes/week of quality independent reading, at their appropriate level, and has completed the required questions in complete and edited sentences with outstanding effort and quality. 100 minutes per week equals an additional "A" grade added to your child's reading grade.
10 hours or 600 minutes per month of verified reading equals the Wrangler Reading Monthly Bonus!
In addition, our wonderful PTO created an exciting morning of gameshows for all Wrangler readers and staff to participate and celebrate the end of the 2007-2008 Wrangler Reading Program.
Read, read, read, read, read, read, read, and read some more!
For Your Information:
The 3rd quarter’s report presentation will be a PowerPoint presentation, which we will start learning and practicing in the computer lab. The PowerPoint presentation is an advertisement for the book. Students need a minimum of three slides to present to the class. We will be working on this at school, although many students choose to work on their PowerPoint at home, since our computer time is limited and many have learned this program in 2nd and 3rd grades.
Please sign the slips and verify the material read for the Wilson Wrangler Reading Program (calendar). The time read at home for the Weekly Reading Log: A-Z pamphlets and any reading for enjoyment can be used for this program.
Students may select reading: magazines, newspapers, comics, short stories, chapter books, etc. Please remember the hours will only count for the Wrangler Reading Program if the student turns in the reading calendars signed by their parent.
Research shows that 4th grade students need to read 1,000,000 words per year! Read with your child, ask them comprehension questions as they read aloud to you, practice using the dictionary or use dictionary.com to find definitions of unknown words.
Together, we will build strong readers, who love reading!
Thank you for encouraging your child to read!
