| Welcome to eighth grade physical education. Our vision for the La Cima eighth grade P.E. program is to see our students become more physically active both in and out of school, be responsible and respectful members of society and grow to live happy and healthy lives. I look forward to working with your kids this year. |

| My name is Doug Buchanan and I have been teaching for 25 years, all in the Amphitheater District. I graduated from Canyon Del Oro High School in 1977 and the University of Arizona in 1981. I taught at Amphi Evening High School from 1983 until 1991 and then was hired to serve on the core team to open a new middle school. That middle school was La Cima. I have taught here ever since. I also coach three of the four athletic seasons. My main interests are my family, playing golf and playing the guitar. |

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This semester students will learn fundamental skills and rules for a variety of sports and activities. Students will work in a variety of group sizes designed to maximize participation and students’ involvement. Lessons will be designed for students of all skill levels in order to promote growth of individual skill. Students are required to participate in every sport and activity. Students are expected to understand the role of sportsmanship in athletics and make decisions that show respect for others and themselves. Each student should have a personal goal to improve in every activity. Throughout the semester, students will also participate in discussions on important health and physical fitness topics.
GRADING: Daily, each student will be graded on three different criteria: participation, attitude & effort. Everyday a student has the opportunity to earn daily points based on his or her behavior in class. Students that are participating with a good attitude (sportsmanship, respect, being responsible) while putting forth a good effort (trying their hardest no matter the sport or activity) will earn all their daily points. A student that fails to dress out for PE is showing a poor attitude towards class and is not going to be able to participate with 100% effort. Students that fail to dress out for activity more than 3 times will see a dramatic drop in their grade. In addition, each student will be expected to complete a major project that will be due at the end of the semester. There will be several types of projects to chose from (Video productions, written reports, student-teaching, etc.).
GENERAL PE GUIDELINES AND RULES: Students are assigned a lock and a locker for their valuables in the locker room. Each student is responsible for the care of his or her lock during the semester. Locks that are not returned or returned damage will cost students five dollars. Students are required to wear a La Cima Cardinals t-shirt and athletic shorts or pants to PE. Students who wish to borrow PE clothes for the semester may approach me about checking out clothes. Once clothes are checked out they are the student’s responsibility for the rest of the semester and lost clothes will result in a replacement charge. Students that forget their clothes on any given day may borrow from the daily borrow bin. The daily borrow bin is a last resort, students are encouraged to place a spare set of PE clothes in their lockers for days they forget to bring a clean uniform. Students that are going to be missing PE activities due to injury must provide a parent note for injuries removing them for 1-5 days and a doctor’s note to excuse them for more than 5 days. Each day that is missed, the student will be expected to complete a one day excercise and food journal where they track their activities and food intake for one 24 hour period. If this is not completed, the student will receive no points for that day. Class activity time is 40 minutes. Every minute is valuable. Water breaks will be scheduled regularly, but bathroom breaks should be taken care of during passing and dress out times. Students are not allowed to bring food, binders or backpacks into the locker room—all items will be confiscated if seen.
STATE STANDARDS: § PE Standard 1: Students demonstrate proficiency and the achievement of higher order cognitive skills necessary to enhance motor skills. § PE Standard 2: Students comprehend basic physical activity principles and concepts that enable them to make decisions, solve problems and to become self-directed lifelong learners who are informed physical activity consumers. § PE Standard 3: Students exhibit a physically active lifestyle. § PE Standard 4: Students achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical fitness. § PE Standard 5: Students develop self-initiated behaviors that promote effective personal and social interactions in physical activity settings. § PE Standard 6: Students demonstrate understanding and respect for differences among people in physical activity settings. § PE Standard 7: Students develop behavioral skills (self-management skills) essential to maintaining a physically active lifestyle.
FITNESS TESTS: Your child will participate in the Presidents Challenge fitness test at the beginning, middle and end of the semester. Students will participate in a four-event fitness test, evaluating the student’s overall fitness level. In addition, I will be measuring both their height and their weight. The four components of fitness are aerobic endurance, muscular endurance, muscular strength, and flexibility. Each component is tested with a separate fitness test. The mile run is a running test that evaluates the students’ aerobic endurance; the flexed arm hang or pull ups tests the students’ muscular strength. Students use the sit and reach to measure their flexibility. To test the students’ muscular endurance students participate in the 1-minute sit-up test. Fitness tests are designed to measure the individual’s growth throughout the semester and are not used to determine a student’s grade. The results of these tests are used to measure growth as well and are not intended to make comparisons between students.
ATTITUDE: Every student is in control of his or her own attitude and decision-making. The attitude a student brings to class is going to greatly affect their mood during our activities. Many times, we will be participating in activities that may not be of great intrest to the student. I still expect enthusiastic participation. I expect all our students to be respectful of each other and themselves at all times. Teamwork and sportsmanship are a direct reflection of a student’s attitude and personality and I expect all students to follow the six pillars of character—trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. Poor language is a reflection of a student’s attitude and is not acceptable in class.
