Current and Upcoming Events
7th Grade: We are exploring science as inquiry and have done a couple experiments where students have gone from research question through verification. Students should be able to tell anyone about how the steps of a science experiment work. We are then going to be transitioning those skills and knowledge into our study of ecology. We are rounding up 2 liter soda bottles in preparation for Bottle Biology. Bottles full of soda may be used in the interest of science to investigate the effects of various amounts of Mentos and types of sodas on the resulting eruption. Then we will have an empty bottle that will be useful to us to set up a small ecosystem. Before any supplies are purchased, students MUST submit a proposal showing me the research about how to care for the living organisms they will incorporate into their ecosystem. No organisms are to be harmed in the course of these experiments and I am also requiring that students make sure arrangements are made for a home for the creature after the project.

8th Grade: We have been exploring life science by first zooming into living organisms to gain insight into how things work on a cellular level. That has led to interesting discussions about cancer and heredity. We have looked at the rolls of Mendel, Punnett, Watson, Franklin, and Crick in their discoveries and work relating to our understanding of heredity.

Currently we are studying botany and using the scientific process to investigate effects of experimental treatments on plants. Students have submitted research questions and have in many cases been encouraged to research more items before any formal work and purchasing of supplies begins. Students in periods 4 and 8 have the option of working with students from Mr. William's class as well. While these projects are not due until December 1st, it is imperative that consistent progress be shown. There are several checkpoints along the way (see Botany Project link at left). Additionally, a verification test or repeat or slightly modified test must be performed. So the first round of testing and experimentation should be done by around October 15th. Students were also instructed in making a project completion timeline that should also help balance out team member roles. Ask to see this if questions arise.

Supplies requested:
*2 liter bottles (full or empty)--7th grade
dish soap
hand sanitizer
paper towels
tissue (cold and flu season seems to be starting early)
gift wrapping tubes--8th grade for ROCKETS.
ziploc bags (both quart and gallon)
plastic cups

Reminder (Both Grades): Keep your notes and handouts all year in your comprehensive binder. Do not throw anything out unless specifically told it is OK. Periodically review older material as you gradually prepare for the first semester exam and the end of the year final.
