Homework Policy

You will have approximently one hour of homework each night. Homework is not typically assigned on weekends. All homework must be turned in the morning that it is due to your mailbox. Late work will be accepted within one day of the due date. However, 11% will be deducted from the final grade.

Students with missing work will be required to attend a study hall during Wednesday's extra recess time.

What to look for......

* First of all, you can always check any 5th grade teacher's website for updated homework assignments each night.

Nightly reading is required. Students are responsible for a total of 100 minutes a week which can be divided up however you wish. (Although, I do not recommend once a week reading. Too much time between readings and the reader disengages. It becomes word calling or "fake reading" as I call it instead of engaging themselves and really getting into the literature.) A weekly calendar is filled out and turned in on Tuesdays.
Math homework is assigned daily as well. It should not consist of more than 10 to 15 problems and is due the next day.
Spelling homework is assigned on Monday and is a "work at your own pace" kind of thing. A few pages are due Wednesday and one on Thursday.
Language Arts homework is not as consistent. Monday through Wednesday the kids will have DOL practice, study on Thursday and a test on Friday. This is 10-15 minutes of focused practice. Other than that, if the kids have homework, it usually is to finish up what we started in class.
***There is a small amount of time given in class to work on spelling and DOL practice. Kids who are focused and use their time wisely complete most of it in class.
