Matter: everything which takes up space and has mass

Mass: how much matter is in "something"

Properties:: a characteristic of an object, something you can observe such as size, color, shape, or texture.

Mixtures: two or more materials stirred together.
Ex. chocolate and milk = mixture of choc. milk
**Some mixtures can be separated with filters.

Solution: a special mixture formed when a material dissolves in water.
-always clear...see through
Dissolving: a process in which one material disperses uniformly into another material, so that the first material seems to disappear.

Matter in its smallest form, unable to break it down or separate it any more = Elements

The tiniest piece of an element = atom

Atoms: Atoms are the smallest unit of matter that can be separated.

Atoms join together to “build” matter.
All atoms are made of three particles called:
Protons
Neutrons
Electrons
Nucleus: Is at the center of an atom

Contains the protons and neutrons

Electrons move in circles around the nucleus much like planets around the sun.

Chemical change/reaction: the chemical make-up is changed and something new is made, example: In our experiment when we mixed calcium chloride and baking soda, a gas was made and a new white solid was made.

Physical change/reaction: the materials only change form, example: ice melting into water
