Grading Procedures for Mrs. Rowe's Third Grade Class

Often the students and I complete work together or the students work with other students. Of course, the students work independently too, especially as the school year progresses and they know what is expected of them.

All math work is checked and graded by the Accelerated Math Computer Program.

When I grade pieces of student writing, I look for different elements of the 6 Traits of Writing - conventions (punctuation, capital letters at the beginning of sentences, etc.), ideas, organization, voice, sentence fluency, and word choice - as well as spelling, use of grammar, paragraphing, the amount of written work completed, and neat handwriting. I do not look for all of these items at the same time!

On student work, I will include either the letter grade (O, S+, etc.) or the numerical grade (100%), and sometimes I include both. On online and paper grade reports and quarterly report cards, I use O (outstanding), S+ (more than satisfactory), S (satisfactory),
S- (less than satisfactory), and N (needs improvement/area of concern) for grades. O = 90-100%, S+ = 80-89%, S = 70-79%, S- = 60-69%, N = 59% and below.

I am keeping some student work in a growth file for you to view at a parent-teacher conference in October and any time you visit school. All work in the file will be sent home in May. A lot of work is done in notebooks and folders where the pages cannot/will not be torn out. Work that is sent home will be placed in the Take Home Folder on a Monday or the Notes Home Envelope on a Thursday, the days when you are looking for important information from school (Mondays - Mrs. Rowe's weekly newsletter, Thursdays - important papers from school and Mrs. Rowe in the Notes Home Envelope).

The situation with online grades (or paper copies of grade reports) is quite messy throughout the district right now due to a change in the student management system. Although teachers were initially told not to use the grading program that they have used in the past, we have now been told to use it. I will get everything set up and running as quickly as possible.

Information regarding online grades (or paper copies of grade reports) will be sent home at the beginning of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarters. I will post grades online (or send home paper copies of grades) every two to three weeks. I will post grades online on Tuesdays by dinnertime and send home papers copies of grades (only for families without Internet access) on Thursdays (look in Notes Home Envelope).

Your child will receive math grades from his/her math teacher, reading grades from his/her reading teacher, art grades from the art teacher, pe grades from the pe teacher, science grades from Mrs. Milton, and all other grades from me. Report cards will be given to you during your Parent Teacher Conference in early October and sent home on December 17th, March 12th, and May 20th with your child.
