Usually to be considered for this honor a student must achieve a 99% or higher in science for the quarter during one of the first two quarters. No student may attend CIMI if they have been before with Cross Middle school in a previous year. Other criteria include a 3.0 GPA, Good citizenship with no referals, and highly motivated in science. Support students are given special consideration.

CATALINA ISLAND MARINE INSTITUTE (CIMI) TRIP
Cross Middle School 7th & 8th Graders

Cross science teachers have been taking students to CIMI for over 20 years. CIMI is dedicated to giving kids a science adventure that not only teaches marine science and island ecology, but also stimulates a curiosity for nature and becomes a treasured memory. This three-day program consists of 2 snorkeling dives and labs in:

§ oceanography
§ fish
§ sharks/skates/rays
§ invertebrates
§ plankton
§ algae
§ marine mammals

This trip is made available to only 86 7th & 8th grade CMS students as a reward for exemplary work in the science classroom. Students are chosen for participation each year by the science faculty based on qualities of science scholarship, general academic achievement, work habits, behavior, and campus citizenship.

CRITERIA:

The following criteria take into account students grades, work habits and citizenship during the first two quarters:
1. A 3.0 GPA in science for 1st and 2nd quarters, or significant academic improvement over time
2. No D’s or F’s in any class (including Electives/PE/RS)
3. No N’s or U’s for citizenship or work habits in any class (including Electives/PE/RS)
4. No significant disciplinary action

Students may request special consideration if they:
§ have less than a 3.0 GPA in science
§ have received a D or F in another class
§ have an N or U in citizenship or work habits
§ state their reason in writing and attach it to the application and essay form

In the past, students who can demonstrate self-control during new, active learning situations have made this a successful trip.

Selected students are required to pass a basic swimming test at a local pool in the spring. This test involves:
§ swimming 50 meters
§ retrieving a ten-pound brick from the bottom of a nine-foot deep pool
§ treading water for two minutes

§ More information will be presented to your child’s in his/her science class at the beginning of this school year and will be available on the Cross web page.
§ Applications will be available in December.
§ Applications are due on Friday, January 18th, 2008.
§ All applications are verified to ensure all qualifications are met.
§ In the event that not enough qualified students initially apply, applications may be accepted until all spots are filled.
