Current Events should cover the areas of politics, government or history (NO science related stories). Students should use the form provided and complete all areas. The summary should be at least 5 to 6 sentences long. The article used must be attached to the form. Up to four students can present each day. Due dates have changed - 1st is due by October 31, 2nd by Nov. 14, 3rd by Nov. 28 and last by Dec. 12. They may present early but will not after that date. Please encourage your child to sign up now and get them done early. The forms are now online for their convenience.
The Blog - Students will also participate in a WIKI/blog dealing with a variety of issues. They will need to respond at least 2 times during the quarter. The blog will be limited to Cross Middle School (at first) and require approval of the blog administrator to have the response posted. Students will be given an ID/access code that will protect their identities.
The Projects Oh, the places we are going to go this year (I hope). The students will start by developing a ‘Wiki’ dealing with the events leading up to the Civil War. Students will begin by exploring who settled in America, the reasons for the settlements, and how geographic, climatic and outside political issues affected the settlements. They will use this information to develop and maintain their own Wiki website which will be incorporated into our class curriculum.
As we move closer to the war, the students will explore the background of the main participants to gain a better understanding of who these people were. They will focus on their experiences prior to and after the war.
Students will look at their own genealogy by developing a family tree, research inventions during our course timeline, affects on society at the time, and demonstrate their ability to produce acceptable notes. Finally, yet importantly, we will continue to work with the local food bank and develop a program to assist our troops and families.
Management reserves the right to change or add projects during the year. (Sometimes the students come up with great ideas).
