Third Grade Spelling Words

| | Our school has adopted the Rebecca Sitton Spelling program. This program emphasizes the importance of spelling words correctly in students daily writing rather than using a weekly spelling list where the students memorize a few words for a Friday test and then they are often forgotten.
Students will be introduced to 10 new words every week . We will pre-view the words to see which of these words the students have already mastered. Our class will then participate in spelling activities that teach spelling rules for words in the core list and similar words. The ords will be tested in the form of a dictation test.
Students will also be assessed on their spelling within their writing. Once a week, I will collect a piece of writing (the students will not know which piece will be assessed) and I will grade it for correct use of the "NO EXCUSE WORDS". These words are in your child's writing folder, posted in the class and a list is sent home. This grade will be a pass/fail grade. I will bracket 2-3 sentences within the writing piece and check the No Excuse Words only. If they are all spelled correctly they will pass. If not, the student will need to find the error and make the correction to get a passing grade.
