Reading
During the first period of each day, all La Cima students are in a reading class. Students are tested at the start of the year and placed into a level that will challenge them to grow in the areas of reading that they need most.

This year I am teaching a 6th grade class focusing on reading comprehension. Students placed into my reading class may be rather fluent readers, but the reading assessment has found that they need improvement in comprehension.

We will be working on a variety of comprehension skills this year. We will also read several short books as a class, so we can apply our newly learned skills.

Pre-Algebra
The Arizona State Mathematics Standards for 8th grade will be taught using the following curriculum. I am using an 8th grade pre-algebra text by Glenco. This textbook is found on the internet at www.pre-alg.com. The website lists the chapters and lessons covered by the book. I will, to a large degree, follow the sequence of the textbook. Some lessons in the text will be skipped because they are not 8th grade Arizona math standards. At the same time, I will be including some lessons that are not found in the textbook, but they are in the Arizona math standards.
