Art Class Information

The art class offered by Mrs. Callahan is a traditional studio art class that combines two-dimensional and three-dimensional art projects.

Each quarter focuses on a separate theme:

*The theme for first quarter is "Patterns," and projects for first quarter art will deal with a variety of pattern types. Students will explore natural, man-made, and mathematical patterns through their art. First quarter art includes a ceramic component and students will be incorporating tessellating patterns into their ceramic glaze work.

*The theme for second quarter is "Color," and projects for second quarter art will deal with blending and using color for dramatic effect. Second quarter art includes a ceramic component and students will be incorporating experimental glaze designs into their ceramic slab construction projects.

*Third quarter will learn about and create Surrealist Art.

*Fourth quarter will study Ceramics.

GRADING

Grading for the class is divided into three categories. The first category is participation/attendance. One third of a student's grade will come from how well he/she attends class and how much attention he/she gives to the art projects during class. Students may chat with their friends as they work, but they must be actively engaged in their art projects for the entire work session of the class to receive full credit in this category. They must also be responsible with the art materials and properly clean and store their supplies.

The second category consists of a set of credit/no credit assignments intended to give students a chance to practice the skills they will be graded on at the end of the unit. Students may re-do any of these assignments multiple times alone or with help from Mrs. Callahan until they are comfortable with the new skills highlighted in each lesson. These assignments make up one-third of a student's total grade and each student is responsible for re-doing any credit-no credit work when they feel they need more practice in a given area. Only when they feel confident with their skills should they move on to the graded final project for each unit.

The third category that comprises the last third of a student's grade is the final project for each unit. This project is graded on the student's ability in only the categories studied in each unit. This is a multi-level class and students come to this class with a wide variety of art experience, from living and breathing art to never having taken a class before. Students are not required to have art experience in order to enter this class and grading for this section is done on an individual basis. Students will each be given a score for this section of their grade that reflects how much progress they have made with a particular technique from the start to the end of a given unit of study.
