Square Of Life in the Desert
We joined an online collaborative activity that helped us discover and explore the desert area of our schoolyard environment and then compare our findings with students from across the United States.

This was quite an involved project where the students measured a square of land in the desert. They watched then recorded everything they observed in and around that square. We then reviewed reports from different schools around the world. We decided to compare our findings with Florida because we are such a dry state and they are a wet state. The project was quite interesting.
Same and Different
Hi! Our school is called Wilson K-8. We live in Tucson Arizona. We are comparing our square to a school called Woodlands Elementary School in Florida. We both found ants, a beetle, a worm, dirt, and rocks. They found flying bugs, snails, spiders, mushrooms, trees, weeds, paper, and plastic. We learned that we have many differences and many things that we have in common.
Fun In The Desert
Hi, we live in the deserts of Tucson Arizona. Our school is named Wilson K-8. We compared our square with Woodlands Elementary located in Florida. We chose this state because they live across the country. We both found ants because ants live everywhere. We both found worms, ours was in a tree. We both had bushes because bushes need water and sun to grow. We both had dirt because dirt is in hot places and on beaches. They found plastic which is litter. We didn’t. We found sticks because we live in the desert. They found a snail. We didn’t find a snail because they live near water and snails live near water too. We learned that there are billions of cactuses and plants in the desert. It was fun doing this project. We hope you enjoy our report.
Comparing States
Hi! We live in the deserts of Tucson Arizona. Our school name is Wilson K-8. We are comparing with Woodlands Elementary school in Florida. We found fire ants and Woodlands Elementary school found black ants. We found one seedpod but they did not find any seedpods. We found lots of holes but they did not find any. They found snails but we did not. We did not because most snails do not live in the desert. They live in wet places. They found mushrooms. We didn’t because mushrooms don’t grow in the desert. They grow in wet places. Florida is wetter than Tucson. Florida and Arizona are a good state to compare.
Cactuses Everywhere
