ABOUT THE CLASS
The SRA reading class is a direct instruction research based class. Each level of the program is based on cumulative skill development. Skills and strategies are taught through examples and repetition. The difficulty of material increases gradually but steadily. The students have a daily lesson which begins with decoding words. These words are repeated throughout the lessons and built upon. We read the words together as a group and then individually. We then move onto a story. The stories are grouped and continuos. Each student reads a passage of the story outloud. There are comprehension questions that go along with the story we discuss orally. The students then read the stories with their partner for fluency. The goal is to become a fluent reader. Then the students do the workbook that goes with each lesson. There are comprehension questions, sequencing, word morphology, and other areas that the workbook addresses.
The students are required to read at least 20 minutes a night, (Mon-Thurs). This may be counted for any reading the student does, whether it be other homework or just for fun reading. A signature by an adult is required on their "reading log", which they will recieve weekly.
ACCELERATED READER
As part of the curriculum in my reading class, each student will be reading on their own a self selected Accelerated Reader book. These books are broken up by grade levels and are worth certain points. The student chooses the book, then takes a test on a computer. The computer scores it and assigns the points earned.
