Monday- February 2 Class work: Today we completed our bellwork and copied down the vocabulary for the day ("magn" which means great).Then Mrs. Nicholas introduced the Greek mythology unit to us. Finally, we read a one page text about mythology and completed a crossword puzzle.

Tuesday- February 3 Class work:Today we completed our bellwork and copied down the vocabulary for the day. The root today was "man" which means "hand" as in "manicure" and "manual." Then we read a text entitled "An Introduction to Greek Gods and Goddesses." Finally we completed a reading response. If we didn't finish the classwork it is homwork and is due tomorrow.

February 4 Class work:Today we completed our bellwork. We did not get a new vocabulary work since we will have a quiz on Friday. Mrs. Nicholas told us to start studying our vocabulary. Then Mrs. Nicholas directed our attention to the noun pages in our folder. She said we will need them tonight for our grammar work. Next we read a text entitled "Mythology." Then we worked on a worksheet as a response to the reading we did. If we didn't finish in class then we must finish it as homework. Mrs. Nicholas will have the text on her website for us to use. It is due tomorrow.

Homework:Finish today's classwork and Grammar 3.5.
February 5 Class work:Today we completed bellwork and graded the grammar worksheet. Then students completed yesterday's classwork (worksheet for "Introduction to Greek Gods and Goddesses"). We finished the day with a review of the vocabulary.
Homework: Active Reading sheet and study for the vocabulary test.
February 6 Class work:Today we completed our bellwork. Then we practiced our vocabulary for five minutes before the quiz. We took the quiz. Next we read a booklet with a partner and took turns summarizing and reading. Those that finished the booklet had a chance to start rewriting the bellwork paragraph which is due on Monday.

Homework: Rewrite the bellwork paragraph. Complete the Active Reading sheet for Monday.
February 9 Class work: Today we discussed how our new Active Reading sheet will be graded. Mrs. Nicholas showed us a sample worksheet and demonstrated how to check it. We also got some ideas for completing the worksheet with excellence. Period one completed the bellwork for today but the other classes did not.

Vocabulary- meter=measure(meter, thermometer)

Homework: Last week's bellwork is to be rewritten as a paragraph and turned in tomorrow. The Active Reading sheet for today is to be finished by tomorrow.
February 10 Class work:Today we began the day with bellwork. Then we completed grading the Active Reading sheets. We wrote reading goals for this week and then Mrs. Nicholas had four random students model a routine called first-last for us. We will use this group discussion routine next week to discuss our reading goals. People had a chance to finish the bellwork from last week and the summary for "Welcome to Mt. Olympus."

February 11 Class work:Today we completed bellwork. Then we started a group activity. We had to read the Greek version of creation by reading sentences on strips of paper that each of us had. They were not in order, so we had to decide out the correct order by reading to each other and figuring out the sequence. Then we received our grammar worksheet.

Vocabulary: omni=all, completely (omnipresent, omnivorous)

February 12 Class work:Today we completed bellwork and learned about joining independent clauses with semicolons in a compound sentence. Mrs. Nicholas also used a poem to help us learn what "paragon" means. Then we graded our bellwork. Finally, we completed the "Chaotic Creation" activity as a class.

Vocabulary: ped=foot (pedal, pedestrian)

Homework: Study for the vocabulary check tomorrow and complete the metacognitive sheet for our R/S reading.
February 13 Class work:Today we completed our bellwork. We discussed using a prepositional phrase at the beginning of a sentence. This is a way to add variety to the beginning of sentences in our writing. Our vocabulary check is postponed to Monday. We worked on some new vocabulary in anticipation of a text that we will be reading next week. We made cards with definitions and pictures to use for a concentration type game with the vocabulary. We ended class by playing pictionary with the words.

Vocabulary- no new words

Homework: Study for the vocabulary check on Monday. You will not be held accountable for a completed R/S reading reflection because of the interruptions to the reading time today.
February 16 Class work:Today we finished the bellwork entitled "The Changing Role of Myths." We will not rewrite it as a paragraph this week. Then we graded the Active Reading sheet from last week. Next we wrote out our reading goals for this week. Fianlly, we met in a group and shared our goals using a collaborative routine called first-last. We will have the vocabulary check tomorrow.

Vocabulary- phobia=fear (agrophobia, hydrophobia)

Homework:Study vocabulary. Complete the metacognitive Active Reading sheet.
February 17 Class work:Today we corrected the bellwork sentence. Then we completed the vocabulary check. Next we participated in various activities intended to help us learn the difficult vocabulary that we will encounter in the text that we will be reading in class tomorrow.

Vocabulary: pop=people (population, populous)

February 18 Class work: Today we completed our bellwork and discussed the use of prepositional phrases at the beginning of a sentence. This is a strategy that students can use to "dress-up" their writing and add variety to the beginning of sentences. Next we got in our Supportive Team Reading Groups and read the text entitled "The Changing Role of Myths." We used team talk to discuss questions and then Mrs. Nicholas quizzed random individuals.

Vocabulary: tele=over a long distance; far (telephone, telescope)

February 19 Class work:Today we completed our bellwork. Then we used the informational text from yesterday to pick out main ideas for each paragraph. Next we identified details that supported each of the main ideas.

Vocabulary: tempo=time (contemporary, temporary)

Homework:Finish the main idea work from class today and also finish the Active Reading sheet.
February 20 Class work:Today we finished the bellwork sentence. Then we handed in the main idea work that we began yesterday. Next we got into our differentiated skill group. In our groups we began to outline the informational text that we have been working on. We will conclude this work on Monday. We will also have the vocabulary check on Monday.

No new vocabulary.

Homework: Study for the vocabulary check on Mondaqy. Finish the Active Reading sheet. You should have four complete sheets for Monday.
February 23 Class work: Today we finished the bellwork sentence. Then we took our vocabulary quiz. Next we wrote our bellwork paragraph from last week and turned it in. We graded our Active Reading Sheets from last week and determined personal goals for our reading. We discussed the goals using the first-last routine.

Vocabulary: therm=heat (thermal, thermostat)

February 24 Class work: Today we completed our bellwork and recorded the vocabulary word in our spiral. Then we read "Arachne" in our groups for the purpose of understanding.

February 25 Class work: We corrected the bellwork and then wrote a sentence on the back of the pink sheet. The sentence had to have an appositive in it and be about the myth "Arachne." This will be our grade for bellwork this week. Next groups finished discussing question numbers 1-7 following the story. Then we completed a critical thinking worksheet about the myth. Finally, we took an individual comprehension test over the story. If we scored 80% or above then we did not need to do the "options" work.
