| Monday-January 4 |
Social Studies: Class work for January 4-Today students made a new entry in their SBoL. We activated prior knowledge about Greece by creating an A-B-C record of ideas and knowledge. We continued to add to this record as we watched a video about Greece.
Homework:
Language Arts Classwork: Today we discussed three genres. (biography, historical fiction, Newberry Award winners)Students recorded the names of people and historical time periods that may be of interest for this quarter's book selection. We will go to the library tomorrow to check out books.
Homework: If you have a book checked out from the library, be sure to return it tomorrow.
Exploratory Classwork: Today we corrected the warm-up sentence. Then students wrote about "going public with your learning." We will continue this work tomorrow. Mrs. Nicholas began to read a book to us called The Slave Dancer. It is about a thirteen-year-old boy who lives in New Orleans during the time of the slave trade. |

Social Studies: Class work for January 5-Today students added to the A-B-C list that they started yesterday as we resumed watching the video.

Language Arts Classwork: Today we were in the computer lab to take the MAP reading test.
Homework: If you have a book checked out from the library, be sure to return it tomorrow.
Exploratory Classwork: Today we corrected the warm-up sentence. Then students added to their reflections about "going public with your learning." We will process this thinking further tomorrow. |

Social Studies: Class work for January 6-Today students determined the main idea and details of a paragraph.Students added to the A-B-C list that they started Monday as we finished watching the video.
Homework: No homework.
Language Arts Classwork: Today students formatted an assignment for identifying the two books they are going to read this quarter. In period six, Mrs. Nicholas modeled the new active reading sheet that we will be using this year. Period seven went to the library to determine books to read this quarter. Mrs. Nicholas did a mini-lesson to prepare students for the grammar sheet for homework tonight.
Homework: Grammar 3.1 is due tomorrow. The book assignment is due on Friday.
Exploratory Classwork: Today we corrected the warm-up sentence. Then students refined their thinking about "going public with your work." The refining took the form of rereading our writing and underlining ideas that are worthy of going public. Then we narrowed our selection of ideas to share by highlighting only three ideas. Then we attempted to rewrite the ideas in a thoughtful, succint statement of 10 or fewer words. |
| Thursday-January 7 |
Social Studies: Class work for January 7-Today students determined the main idea and details of a paragraph. Mrs. Nicholas modeled how to use the metacognitive reading sheet. Then we began to read page 122 with one of our appointments.
Homework: No homework.
Language Arts Classwork: Today Mrs. Nicholas handed out some yellow pages that will help us complete our grammar worksheet. Then we used the rest of the period to work on our science projects.
Homework: Grammar 3.1 is due Friday. The book assignment is due on Friday.
Exploratory Classwork: Today we corrected the warm-up sentence. Students rewrote their ideas about going public with their work. The ideas were shared in a group of four. |

Social Studies: Class work for January 11-Today students determined the main idea and details of a paragraph. The paragraph was about how government in the Greek city-states changed over time. Then students joined groups and began to read a myth together using Cornell notes.
Homework: No homework.
Language Arts Classwork: Today we went to the computer lab to check our grades for this quarter. Period seven then worked on making corrections to Grammar 3.1.
Homework: If you didn't get your grades in class, go online and get those tonight.
Exploratory Classwork: Today we corrected the warm-up sentence about President Woodrow Wilsono. Then we looked at our grades for our work from last week to see what kind of mistakes we need to avoid this week. Then we went to our groups to determine our collective learning about going public with our learning. |
| Tuesday- January 12 |
Social Studies: Class work for January 12-Today students determined the main idea and details of a paragraph. The paragraph was about how the purpose of Greek myth has changed over time. Students worked in groups to finish reading a myth together using Cornell notes.
Homework: Finish the notes, including the summary, for the myth. This work is due Wednesday.
Language Arts Classwork: Today we evaluated the work that students did on the metacognitive reading sheet that we are using for R/S. Then we began to use the same type of organizer as we read about Greek poetry and fables.

Social Studies: Class work for January 13-Today sudents completed a reading and a crossword puzzle. Then we read myth.
Homework: Finish the notes, including the summary, for the myth about Icarus. This work was due today.CHECK THE DOCUMENTS PAGE FOR THE STORY OF ICARUS AND DAEDALUS.
Language Arts Classwork: Today Mrs. Nicholas told us about Hercules. Then we began to read the twelve labors that he had to perform to make up for the horrible destruction that he caused. Mrs. Nicholas helped prepare us for completing our grammar worksheets.
Homework: Grammar worksheets 3.2 are due on Friday.
Exploratory Classwork: Today we had public displays of learning from two groups that were ready on time. After the presentations, the other groups worked to try to finish their work. |

Social Studies: Class work for January 14-Today sudents read a paragraph about Athens and identified the main idea and the supporting details. Then they took Cornell notes on pages 138-141 from the textbook. These notes are due tomorrow and the text pages are available on the "Class Documents" page of this website. I also put them on the "Work for January" link.
Homework: Finish the notes for the textbook reading
Language Arts Classwork: Today we worked on summarizing one of the twelve labors of Hercules. We worked in pairs as we also illustrated the labor.
Homework: Grammar worksheets 3.2 are due on Friday.The completed summary and illustration for the labor of Hercules is also due on Friday.
Exploratory Classwork: Today we corrected the warm-up sentence. Then we journaled about our group work. Then we took ten minutes to finalize our group presentation. |
| January 15 |
Social Studies: Class work for January 15-Today sudents read a paragraph about the Greek origin of our word for school and identified the main idea and the supporting details. Then they used their Cornell notes from pages 138-141 of the textbook to respond to a notescheck. This was an individual check to see if the notes that are being taken are adequate. On Tuesday students will be working collectively to see if working with their group helps them to recall more of their reading. We began to read a play about the changing democracy of Athens and the contribution of Pericles.
Homework: If you haven't finished the notes for the textbook reading, do so before Tuesday.
Language Arts Classwork:Today students checked Grammar 3.2 if it was completed. Students also turned in their work for Hercules(summary and illustration). Mrs. Nicholas failed to hand out the parent interview form to period 6 so they will complete it for homework on Tuesday. Period 7 will complete it over the weekend.

Exploratory Classwork: First we corrected the final warmup sentence for the week and turned the work in. Today the final groups went public with their learning. Students journaled about the quality of their group's work, nature of the final product, audience reaction, and the worthiness of the content. |

Social Studies: Class work for January 19-Today we finished reading the play about Pericles. Then students returned to their groups from last week to see if they could improve their grade on the notescheck for pages 138-141. This was turned in at the end of the period.
Homework: Students must write two questions for each of the headings and subheadings for the reading. The questions should be recorded on the half sheet that was handed out in class today.
Language Arts Classwork:Today students wrote questions for the textbook reading we are doing on Greek poetry and fables. After generating several questions, students joined their heterogeneous groups to read the text. All members of the group must complete the metacognitive organizer for the reading. Period seven handed in their parent interview. Period six will complete the parent interview tonight.

Social Studies: Class work for January 20-Today students checked their grades on the computers and recorded the grades on the graph. Then we returned to the classroom and began to read a section of the book called "Daily Life in Athens." Students read in homogeneous groups following instructions given to each group. All groups will complete Cornell notes on this section but wil use a variety of processes to assure adequate content.

Language Arts Classwork:Today we played a game called "Grammar is Right." The purpose was to review the skills necessary to complete the grammar worksheet for homework tonight. Then students joined their heterogeneous group to complete the reading about Greek fables, epics, and poets.
Homework: Grammar 3.3 is due tomorrow.

Social Studies: Class work for January 22-Today students worked in their homogeneous groups as they read about Sparta. The groups had various assignments for the note taking that they were doing. Before leaving students shared new learning from today.

Social Studies: Class work for January 25-Today students completed in the note taking they were doing in their homogeneous groups as they read about Sparta. The groups had various assignments for the note taking that they were doing.

Language Arts Classwork:Today students reflected about their MAP scores and set goals for themselves. Then we went to the computer lab to check grades and record them on our line graph.

Social Studies: Class work for January 27-Today students received further instruction about the correct use of the graphic organizer. Then students went to their homogeneous groups to make sure that all group members were on the right track with the organizer. Students put the organizer in their Social Studies folder for safe keeping. We will use it again on Friday.

Language Arts Classwork:Today students shared their Hercules labor with the class. Then we prepared for homework by completing exercises on Grammar 3.4.

Social Studies: Class work for January 28-Today students read about the Peoponessian War between Athens and Sparta.This reading was done in heterogeneous groups and thinking was recorded on the metacognitive sheet. Mrs. Nicholas provided envelopes with prompts to help in the writing of a summary.

Language Arts Classwork:Today students read and introduction to mythology. This text introduced the primary gods and goddesses in Greek mythology and explained the general purpose of mythology within Greek society. Some people were able to share their Hercules illustration and summary.
Homework: Grammar 3.4 is due Friday.
Exploratory Classwork: Today we worked in portable 6 with our eighth grade WEB leader in an attempt to complete the Power Point. |
| January 29 |
Social Studies: Class work for January 29-Today students began to write a paragraph about the founding of Sparta. They were able to use their graphic oraganizer, SBoL (notes), the dictionary, a thesaurus, and one another as resources. Mrs. Nicholas also handed back a previous notescheck for people to redo if they received a C or below. The text pages were available for students to take home if they needed to redo. The pages are also on this website on the documents link.
Homework: REDO the notescheck if you scored a 12 or less.Text is available on the documents page of this website.
Language Arts Classwork:Today Mrs. Nicholas handed back the work that was completed yesterday. Most students need to redo the work and make sure they are following the directions. The text was available to students in class to take home with them. The text is also the first document on the documents page of this website. This work needs to be completed this weekend. Mrs. Nicholas checked with each student on their progress toward finishing their first book by Monday. Students handed in their Grammar 3.4 today. Parent interview forms were handed out. We heard a few more presentations from the Hercules illustration and summary assignment.
Homework: The redo for "Introduction to Greek Mythology" is due on Monday. Parent interview is due on Monday.
Exploratory Classwork: Today we completed the DOL for the week and turned it in. Then we worked in groups to create a T-chart. On the T-chart we identified actions that disrupt a group and actions that contribute to a group. Mrs. Nicholas ended the day by reading to us from The Slave Dancer. |
