Monday- March 1 Social Studies:
Class work for March 1-Today for bellwork we identified the main idea and details for a paragraph about writing a summary. Then we viewed a presentation by Mrs. Nicholas about the geography of Italy. Next we returned to our work on the summary for pages 263-264.

Learning objective:I can generate ideas for my writing with a variety of strategies.

Classwork: Today we added another word to our spiral (initiative-recognizing and doing what needs to be done without being told or asked). Then we looked at an sentence to determine what poetic tools were used. Next Mrs. Nicholas showed us the process she went through to complete her observation poem. We also looked at an observation poem about a match. Then we had work time to work on our poem. Our poem is due on Wednesday. Finally, Mrs. Nicholas explained direct objects to us.

Homework: Finish Grammar 3. 8.

Classwork: Today we completed our warm-up sentence. Then we viewed two presentations on PhotoPeach. Then we began to plan our own presentation with another student. The planning process began with writing the summary as text for the slides and then writing it as a storyboard.

Learning objective: Recognize that going public with my work requires that I work through a process.

March 2 Social Studies:
Class work for March 2-Today for bellwork we tried to identify a mystery picture. It was a picture of ancient ruins of Pompeii. This Roman city was buried by a volcano. Then we worked in our groups to try to complete our summary.

Learning objective:Use time management strategies to complete a written assignment within a given limit.

Develop skills of communication for working with a variety of people on a common task.
Homework: Complete the summary. It is due tomorrow.

Language Arts
Classwork: Today we added another word to our spiral (relevant-connected or having to do with the matter being considered). Then we looked at an sentence to determine what poetic tools were used. Next we looked at a poem entitled "Valentine for Earnest Mann." This poem was about where and how you can find poems. We then worked on our observation poem which is due tomorrow.

Recognize the use white space and line breaks in poetry.

Classwork: Today we completed our warm-up sentence. Students finished their story boards before heading to the computer lab to begin their presentation.

March 3 Social Studies:
Class work for March 3-Today for bellwork we tried answered three questions about a map of the Roman Empire. Next we reviewed the steps that we followed to complete the summary for "Origins of Rome." Then Mrs. Nicholas explained to us how to complete the reflection for this assignment. We used the rest of the period to work on the reflection.

Learning objective:Reflect on work in order to recognize personal learning, skills developed, and where skills will be applied outside of school.

Homework: Complete the reflection. The reflection is due tomorrow.

Classwork: Today we added a prefix to our vocabulary spiral (ante=before e.g. antcedent). Then we looked at an excerpt from a poem by Myra Cohn Livingston to determine what poetic tools were used. We found alliteration and personification among others. Then Mrs. Nicholas modeled how we were to complete the reflection for our poem. We worked on the reflection until the end of the period.

Reflect on your own writing process to identify purposeful decisions that you made as a poet.

Class work for March 4-Today for bellwork we wrote a paragraph to explain the process that we used to complete our group summary. Then we evaluated our work using a rubric. Then we handed in our reflection and the summary with the evaluation.

Classwork: Today we added a prefix to our vocabulary spiral (ambi=both e.g. ambidextrious). Then we looked at an excerpt from a poem to determine what poetic tools were used. We found alliteration and personification among others. Then we observed an apple before reading a poem about an apple. Finally we had work time to finish the reflection. Mrs. Nicholas emphasized that we can not have any spelling errors on the reflection. Grammar 3.9 was also turned in today.

Classwork: Today we added a prefix to our vocabulary spiral (auto=self e.g. autobiiography). Then we looked at an excerpt from a poem to determine what poetic tools were used. We found persona and simile among others. Then Mrs. Nicholas explained the heart map assignment to us. This assignment will be due Friday. We turned in our parent interview forms. Today was the due date for our second completed book.

Class work for March 9-Today for bellwork determined and discussed the vocabulary word "aqueducts." Then students researched the technology of Ancient Rome. We organized our thinking with three columns: fact, inpact, and compare.

Class work for March 10-Today for bellwork students answered questions about the map of Roman trade routes. Then Mrs. Nicholas explained the graphic organizer that we used for our reading today. Next we went to the computer lab to research Roman art and architecture. We worked with our 7:00 appointment.

Homework: Must finish three of the rows on the research paper.

Classwork: Today we added a prefix to our vocabulary spiral (co=with, together e.g. copilot, cooperate). Then we looked at an excerpt from a poem to determine what poetic tools were used. We found rhyme and repetition among others. Next, Mrs. Nicholas explained the process she went through for her heart poem. We wrote for six minutes about one of the objects in our heart map.

March 11 Social Studies:
Class work for March 11-Today for bellwork students identified the main idea and details for a paragraph about how Greek art influenced the art of the Romans. Then we completed an evaluation of our partners collaborative skills. Finally, we went to the library to complete the assignment for the art and architecture of Rome.

Learning objective:Gather background information through reading, discussion, and writing.

Homework: The graphic organizer for Roman art and architecture must be completed and turned in tomorrow.

Classwork:Today we were in the library to try to identify the books that students are going to read for next quarter. Students were able to check out books if they had no overdue books out.
