| October 1 |
Social Studies: Class Work for October 1-Today we recorded our new vocabulary word in our SBoL. Students discussed the Mesopotamian notes and vocabulary with the substitute. Then students responded to a reading/thinking organizer prior to reading an article about Hammurabi. This work will be finished on Friday. Homework: No homework. Any students that did not participate in the class team talk for Mesopotamia on Monday and/or Tuesday need to respond to the questions with written answers. These are due tomorrow and must follow the criteria given in class.
Language Arts: Class Work:For bellwork today students wrote about peer pressure that they have seen or experienced. Then the substitute read a book to us entitled A Day's Work. Next we began to develop a summary of the book.
Homework: Make sure your reading document is completed for R/S. Also, Grammar 1.4 is due tomorrow along with the commentary for Thinking Big. |

Social Studies: Class Work for October 2-Today we recorded our new vocabulary word in our SBoL. Students worked to complete the article about Hammurabi. Students were encouraged to complete this work with another student. They were also encouraged to use any other useful resource in the classroom. Period three took the articles home to complete over the weekend. Homework: Finish the questions for the article. Period 3 students need to complete their written work for Hammurabi.
Language Arts: Class Work:For bellwork today students wrote about a time when they spoke the truth about a mistake they made. Next Mrs. Nicholas explained how the R/S reading sheet works. Then we began to review the book entitled A Day's Work.
Homework: Parent interview is due Monday.

Social Studies: Class Work for October 5-Today we recorded our new vocabulary word in our SBoL.Students completed their worksheet for the article and then we had a fish bowl demonstration of a group working together. Homework: Finish the questions for the article. Period 3 students need to complete their written work for Hammurabi.
Language Arts: Class Work:For bellwork today students wrote about a person that they think is courageous. Next Mrs. Nicholas gave us the reading sheet for this week. Then we completed the summary for A Day's Work. Finally we began the commentary. Parent interview forms were due today.
Homework: Finish the one page commentary for A Day's Work. It is expected that this be a one page written response to the book. Use the commentary prompt sheet in your folder to help you with ideas.

Social Studies: Class Work for October 5-Today we recorded our new vocabulary word in our SBoL.Students reflected on the fish bowl activity from yesterday. We discussed how it is necessary to be honest when working with a group and how it takes courage and hard work to help the members of your group to work together. Then students began to work on a map activity. This is due tomorrow. Homework: Finish the map activity.
Language Arts: Class Work:For bellwork today students wrote about what kind of courage it takes to be a part of a group. Next we read about a research study that was done to investigate the effect of peer pressure on adolescents. This is our last text about courage.
Homework: No new homework. Students need to make sure that all of their work for the courage folder is completed. This includes the commentary for the book A Day's Work.

Social Studies: Class Work for October 7-Today we recorded our new vocabulary word in our SBoL.In period two we had a discussion about word roots, stems, prefixes, and suffixes. Since there wasn't enough time to complete the Team Talk, those that hadn't finished their map worked on completing it. Those that were finished got extra credit for their map. Period three had a discussion about irrigation and water control. Then students worked in groups to discuss the article about Hammurabi's laws. All students had to identify their role and contribution on an exit slip. Homework: Both the map and worksheet need to be completed for class.
Language Arts: Class Work:For bellwork today students wrote about what kind of courage it takes to disagree with a majority. We talked about the brain of an adolescent. Next we summarized the article about peer pressure.
Homework: No new homework. Students need to make sure that all of their work for the courage folder is completed. This includes the commentary for the book A Day's Work and the summary for "Preparing for Adolescence."

Social Studies: Class Work for October 8-Today students completed great team discussions about Hammurabi and Mesopotamia. After the discussions the worksheet "Laying Down the Law" was turned in. Then students completed their maps. Homework: All maps or worksheets need to be completed and turned in.
Language Arts: Class Work:For bellwork today students wrote about a time they tried to persuade a person to do the right thing. Then we completed the commentary for Preparing for Adolescence."
Homework: No new homework. Students need to make sure that all of their work for the courage folder is completed. This includes the commentary for the book A Day's Work and the summary for "Preparing for Adolescence."

Social Studies: Class Work for October 19-Today we recorded our new vocabulary word in our SBoL.The new word is "contribute." We talked about how the contribution of the Sumerians affected later civilizations. Then we took notes on a video about Mesopotamia. Homework: Continent map should be finished by Wednesday. May not be turned in early.
Language Arts: Class Work:For bellwork today students wrote about the different types of courage that they observed in the various texts that we read in class. Students used class time to complete their folders for courage. They had a word map, personal web, and a final definition to complete for the folder. All work was to be stapled to the folder in order.
Homework: Finish the work for the courage folder. This needs to be complete for tomorrow. |
| October 20 |
Social Studies: Class Work for October 20- Today we read pages 26-30 in our textbook and took Q-notes. There will be a quiz in class tomorrow over this section. Homework: Continent map is due tomorrow. Finish your notes for pages 26-30.
Language Arts: Class Work: Today we began to make our courage bumper sticker. Today will be the only class time for working on the bumper sticker. The bumper stickers are due on Friday.
Homework: Bumper sticker must be finished by Friday. |

Social Studies: Class Work for October 21- Today students worked with a word puzzle. Students worked in groups to categorize ideas on cards. All of the ideas were about ways to advance our knowledge of vocabulary. The continent map was due today. Homework: Finish your notes for pages 26-30. Quiz tomorrow over this section of notes.
Language Arts: Class Work: Today we had a mini-lesson on prepositions, infinitives, and pronouns. Then we had the rest of the period to work on our grammar worksheet and the bumper sticker.
Homework: Grammar 2.1 is due tomorrow. Bumper sticker must be finished by Friday. |

Social Studies: Class Work for October 22- Tody we identified three vocabulary words for bellwork. Then we took a quiz over pages 26-30. We were able to use our notes, because Mrs. Nicholas wants us to be rewarded for taking good notes. Homework:If you have not turned in your maps yet, you need to turn them in. .
Language Arts: Class Work:Today we checked the grammar worksheet. Mrs. Nicholas encouraged anyone that doesn't understand the work to come stay after school on Monday to get some help. Next we completed a graphic organizer for a new vocabulary word. The word is "synergy." We will be reading book report books during class tomorrow.All students need to have a fantasy, science fiction, or myth to read.Check the links at the bottom of the home page if you need some ideas.

Social Studies: Class Work for October 23- Today we reviewed three vocabulary words for bellwork. These words were written in our agendas. Then we completed our appointment sheet. Next we reflected on our quizzes. Finally we looked at the pieces of the vocabulary puzzle again by matching and clumping. Homework:If you have not turned in your maps yet, you need to turn them in. .

Social Studies: Class Work for October 26-Today we did our bellwork. A grade was taken on our agenda for last week. Students received their quiz back and finished their reflection by responding to the following prompts: My actual grade on the quiz was "_." Explain the reason for your success or failure. Next students used their textbook and notes to correct their quiz. The corrections were made on the original quiz and stapled to the reflection sheet and then turned in. Homework:No homework. .
Language Arts: Class Work:Today we began a bellwork procedure. Next Mrs. Nicholas handed out a set of directions for us to read and comment on. We took our questions and observations to a small group to discuss them. Tomorrow we will discuss our responese as a group to answer any lingering questions.Parent interviews were due today.

Social Studies: Class Work for October 27-Today we completed the bellwork. Our new word was "describe." This too is an academic word that we will need to know. Next we did a Think, Write, Pair, Share with our 12:00 appointment. This was an activity to check what kind of knowledge we already have about Ancient Egypt. We ended the period watching a video to build further background knowledge for studying Egypt. Homework:No homework. .
Language Arts: Class Work:Today we continued our bellwork procedure. Next we discussed the writing assignment. Then we worked to complete the graphic organizer for the writing assignment. Finally, people began to place their bumper stickers around the room. We will continue to work on these tomorrow.

Social Studies: Class Work for October 28-Today we completed bellwork and then identified five new vocabulary words for the next week. Homework:No homework. .
Language Arts: Class Work:Today we continued our bellwork procedure. We had a mini-lesson on verb phrases. Mrs. Nicholas strongly urged us to use our yellow pages to complete the grammar worksheet tonight. Then we had a work time to finish the graphic organizer, put up our bumper sticker, and begin the grammar worksheet.

Social Studies: Class Work for October 30-Today we completed bellwork. Then we went to the library to research the standards for Egypt. Homework:Finish the research for the Egypt standards. .
Language Arts: Class Work:Today we continued our bellwork procedure by putting all the sentences together to form a paragraph. Then we discussed the paragraph we are writing about predicting before reading a text. The rough draft must be completed by Monday.
