Spelling Log
Sixth grade spelling will be done differently this year than in previous years. Normally students will get a spelling packet in which they have 18 words to study for the week. This year students will start out with 10 words and no spelling packet. Instead students will have a spelling journal in which they will keep track of their words.

All students will start with the first 10 words, then after the first test is graded, they will add the words not spelled correctly from the first list to the second list. If a student did not spell any words incorrectly then they have no words to add to the next list. The students will then write the second list of words, plus the words not correct on their first list. Thus, each student will have their own individual spelling list each week.

After the first week I will no longer administer the spelling test, instead, students will be partnered up, will give their partner their words for the week and their partner will quiz them on their words.

I have implemented this new way of conducting spelling so students actually learn how to spell the words instead of getting them incorrect and then never having a chance to try again and really learn the correct spelling of their words.

This will also allow students to move at their own pace when it comes to their words and spelling list. Hence, spelling will be for the individual and at the pace that individual learns rather than at the pace of a whole class.

Students will keep a log of how long they spend studying their spelling words (atleast 15 minutes) each night. Spelling logs are due every Wednesday. If a student turns in a spelling log the next day, Thursday, they can earn half credit. After Thursday a student can no longer earn credit for their spelling log.
