Fabulous February
February News

I would like to take a moment to introduce Miss Kristen Owen to each of you. She is doing her student teaching with our class for this semester for her completion of her teaching degree from the University of Arizona. I hope you will be able to meet her at our Celebration of Excellence night tbis month.

Also, please remember that our class has signed up for a basket for the carnival auction. The theme as you might expect for our class is Arizona Wildcats:) Please send in any donations for this basket that you are able. If you would prefer to donate cash, I would be happy to go shopping for items to complete our basket. Thanks for your help in supporting our PTO fundraiser.

In Math this month we are computing with fractions and mixed numbers. Expect homework each night practicing the skill we learned in class each day. We will continue to work on our Catstat unit following the Arizona Wildcat basketball team throughout their PAC-10 season. As you know they have really made this an exciting year for us so far. Each student is keeping track of his or her player and the team statistics for each of the 18 games.

In homeroom we will continue taking a timed test each week. Keep working on those math facts. Scoops earned can be traded in for real ice cream at the end of each quarter. The class is doing awesome. I'm confident it is helping them with their daily work in their math classes. We continue to stress our goals in 5th grade to empower students with organization strategies. We have also added to our learning portfolios reflecting on our third quarter goals.

In Social Studies we are finishing our study on the Revolutionary War by taking our end of the unit test on Friday, February 5th.

In Spelling we will continue working on the 5th grade Sitton Spelling core words as well as weekly vocabulary words. We are stressing spelling patterns, rules and proofreading in our lessons and exercises each week. Your help at home with problem words would be greatly appreciated.

Our focus in Reading this month will be individualized instruction in SRA and Specific Skills. Students will need to complete 5 of each for each quarter. Third quarter book projects are due February 22nd. Again the project must be on an AR biography book. Lists for AR books are available on my reading link. We are ending our novel, The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler this month and have been working on questions strategies and using our questions to have book discussions each day over the chapter read. We will begin a new reading unit involving Revolutionary War biographies written by Jean Fritz. We will be learning how to summarize and paraphrase factual information during the reading process. Students will then work on creating summaries and practicing peer editing strategies to become effective writers.

In Science our focus will be on the Science Fair Project which will require students to bring in their parent signature sheets on the assigned dates indicating completion of the scientific process step. We are beginning a month long Science unit related to the human body and its respiratory and circulatory systems. We'll be doing hands on activities by investigating the respiration process by creating simulation lungs. During this month of study, we will also be investigating and promoting healthy heart choices in nutrition and exercise.
Students will recieve a 100% homework grade for signatures handed in on time. Late assignments will be given grades as stated in the Copper Creek Student/Parent handbook.

Volunteers
No one has signed up for any of the classroom positions other than the emergency phone tree. Please let me know if you would be willing to serve. Also I still have lots of days available for classroom volunteer help. If you let me know which days you can come in and help out I will send the paper work home with your child.

Thanks!!
