How to get an "A" in music
Grading Policy Orchestras and the Advanced Guitar class are Performance Classes. Each student earns grades in four areas: 1) Test Scores - from playing and written tests 2) Homework - full credit is 150 minutes of practice each week 3) Class Work - each student earns up to 10 points per day in class 4) Performance - all students are required to attend each performance (1 or 2 each quarter) and they receive credit for their participation. Musical Theater is also a performance class although there is not a daily homework element. The beginning guitar class is not a performance class. Grades are earned from Test Scores, Homework and Class Work.
Homework Policy Homework for all instrumental classes is practice at home. This is a requirement for ALL orchestra and guitar classes. The goal is to practice 150 minutes each week (approximately 20 minutes each day). Practicing is most beneficial when done daily. Since that isn't always possible, practice as many days each week as you can. The more you practice, the better you will become. Practice reports are due each Monday. There is a 10% deduction for each day the work is turned in late. You can lose up to 50% for turning them in late. All practice reports must be signed by a parent or responsible adult.
Performance Policy Performing is the object of each performance class. We work all quarter to prepare material for performance and attendance at each performance is required. Dates are generally known well ahead and should be placed on the family calendar as soon as possible. (A missed performance due to illness can be made up with an essay assignment.)
Orchestra Awards The Orchestra Program is a commitment by the student (and the parents) over a period of several years. Most of our Advanced Orchestra students have been practicing and rehearsing for four or five years and many are taking private lessons as well. We present each of our graduating 8th grade Orchestra students a pin for completion of their years of committment at the middle school level.
