LOOK BEYOND YOUR NOSE!
What can I do this year to meet my goals for high school and beyond?
This is a year long unit focusing on goal setting and taking ownership of your own academic success. Students will set personal goals at the beginning of the year related to specific areas that they would like to change or reinforce in order to be successful in school. Becoming a mature and responsible learner is the overall objective.
Throughout the school year the students will do reflective writing addressing how they are progressing academically and whether they are consistently working towards their goals. Activities related to this theme are planned, with some activities involving parents/guardians.
Guided classroom discussions about the importance of a strong GPA in high school, along with the differences between high school graduation requirements and college entrance requirements will occur. Guest speakers from local colleges and universities will visit to answer questions and provide information. The CDO Link Crew (student organization) will visit in the Spring, along with a CDO counselor to offer guidance and support as they transition from middle school to high school.
I firmly believe that 8th graders are in academic training for high school and they need to be ready to run when they enter their freshman year. Taking ownership of their actions, decisions and encouraging a shift in their thinking towards becoming a mature learner is a critical component for a successful future.
