Dear Parents,
The school year is “March”ing on as we head into this very windy month. I have quite a few things to inform you about so read carefully and mark your calendars.
Attached with the letter today are the goals your child has set for the computer tests (MAP Level Tests) we will be taking again in April. This is the test that tells me, the teacher, what instructional level your child is currently at within each of the testing areas. The reading test is the most difficult one to show growth and improvement. As one area of reading may improve, another may fall back a bit. The best way to counter-act this is to read, read, read. As a parent what can you do to help? 1. Make sure your child is reading a variety of materials at home that are at their reading and comprehension level. 2. Talk with your child about what they are reading, discuss parts of the story, ask for the main idea, etc. 3. Read out loud to your child. Yes, even in 5th grade. Kids need to hear a fluent reader read. Good modeling is necessary. The kids can show you their lexile scores and explain the scores on their paper. We have gone over this in class.
On a regular basis, please look over your child’s work. We send home packets to make sure parents see how their child is doing on tests and class work. Discuss with him/her what they may be doing right or wrong that will help them to become better learners and test takers. This too is a huge way you can assist your child in learning.
Cookie Dough Fundraiser: The spring fundraiser is going home today. All orders are due by Friday March 16. Please send back the envelopes if you are not participating.
(Date below was modified; original date was incorrect) Jump Rope for Heart: The Jump-a-thon sponsored by the Student Council is on Friday, March 16, from 12:15-2:00. Please make sure your child has appropriate clothing for the afternoon. No pogo sticks or other toys will be used, just jump ropes. They are for sale in different links for $2.00 and can be purchased throughout the week.
5th Grade Camp: An informational meeting about 5th grade camp is scheduled for next Monday evening, March 12, at 6:30 PM in the funhouse. The trip to the Triangle Y camp is scheduled for May 9-11th
Student/Parent Reading Quiz: Each student has been assigned 2 of these. I sent home the oral questions for parents to quiz their child a few weeks ago. The first of these quizzes was due today. The next one is due no later than March 16. I am attaching an extra form in case you have misplaced the originals. We are limited on copies we can make so copy this one if you need two. The books should be fiction novels at your child’s ability: Nothing too easy or too hard.
Spring Break March 19-23: On a final note, the end of the 3rd quarter is Friday, March 16th. Report cards will be going home on Wednesday, March 28th. I cannot believe we are so close to the end of the school year and AIMS testing is only a month or so away. This is definitely not a time to slow down. Thank you for helping to support your child’s learning and educational growth.
Cheerfully Yours,
Peggye Springetti
