August and September Intermediat classes 4th grade
Children will be reviewing how to read music on the written page. We will be using worksheets and music in the classroom to practice reading the notes on a written page. Students should be taking the worksheets home to study and practice reading music independently.

5th grade
Students will be learning American history through music this year. Our first group of people are the Native Americans. We will be performing the play “Arrow to the Sun” which is based on a beautiful book from our library.

Your student will be responsible for learning the music, and for creating a costume from each time period in American history. We will be wearing our costumes for the classroom presentation. The idea behind creating a costume is for students to come to an understanding of what the culture was like during each time period, and why people dressed like that.

Our next group of people that we are studying is the People who immigrated to our country before it was a nation. Our song “Simple Gifts” comes from the group of people called the “Shakers.” The play that we are using, “Fish Heads and Snake Skins” is about the Pilgrims. Some Books that might create some interest are: “A Journey to the New World: The Diary of Patience Whipple, Mayflower 1620” by Kathryn Lasky
“N.C. Wyeth’s Pilgrims” by Robert San Souci
“Pilgrims Voices: Our First Years in the New World” by Connie and Peter Roop
“The Pilgrims of Plimouth”by Marcia Sewall
“Stranded at Plimoth Plantation, 1626” by Gary Bowen
